Classical names not in vogue

Currently expecting a dd

I hate the idea of dd being one of many with her name, so any names in the top 100 are out.

I'm looking for classical names that are not currently in vogue.

Examples of names I like (but dh doesn't) are:

Dorothy
Beatrice
Rebecca

Any suggestions?

Vera. Love Vera. Still not many out there.

Only1scoop · 06/10/2014 16:23

Enid
Marion
Josephine

Thurlow · 06/10/2014 16:24

I met a 1 year old Gladys at the park the other day Grin

Some of these are more 'in vogue' that others (though not enough that I'd expect there to be loads in any one school) - Margaret, Alexandra, Penelope, Elizabeth, Helena, Eleanor (if you went for Nell not Ellie)

MerryMarigold · 06/10/2014 16:24

Katherine
Isobel
Eleanor
Elena
Anne
Anna

Took dh ages to agree on a name. It was top 10 when we chose it, and later no.1 but there are still only a couple in the whole school (3 classes per year group).

bassingtonffrench · 06/10/2014 16:28

Eleanor and Isobel are uber popular.

Rebecca is very lovely and has slipped right out of fashion. Same with Josephine

I'd add Mary, Caroline, Lucy, Diana, Deborah

Montsti · 06/10/2014 16:48

Victoria?

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 06/10/2014 16:51

Margaret nn Meg
Winifred nn Win/Winnie

Have to say though I love all three of your names. What has your DH suggested?

wishingwontwork · 06/10/2014 16:53

Oooo I like Enid Smile

Thumbwitch · 06/10/2014 16:53

Sarah
Ann/e
Mary
Jane
Louise? Don't know about this one, might still be a top 100.

TranmereRover · 06/10/2014 16:56

classic or classical?
because if you're going classical, surely that's more the Pandora / Isis / Phoebe / Iphegenia types than Rebecca?

moxon · 06/10/2014 17:33

Lol tran
I've just got the radio on, and the reporter's name is Tulip. What about that? :)

Penelope

Kantha · 06/10/2014 18:20

I would say both Beatrice and Dorothy are both having a resurgence. I know a couple of each aged from 8 down to 3.

Properly out of vogue classic names for me are:

Anne
Mary
Ruth
Caroline
Jane
Susan/Suzanne
Juliet
Julia

Anotheronesoon · 06/10/2014 18:29

Beatrix or Beatrice is quite common I think - I know three

Molotov · 06/10/2014 18:47

Laura? Melanie? Louise?

MerryMarigold · 06/10/2014 18:53

Is Melanie really due a revival?

MerryMarigold · 06/10/2014 18:55

Mary is supposed to be having a mini revival but I've only met one under 5 in the past 4 years.

Flingmoo · 06/10/2014 18:58

Elizabeth - very very classic, not so popular these days. Only if you can put up with having a Lizzie or a Liz though!

snice · 06/10/2014 19:03

I know 4 Marys under 6 but only 1 Elizabeth, 1 Sarah and 1 Jane. No Carolines, Claires, Josephines, Margarets or Susans

dancestomyowntune · 06/10/2014 19:03

Charity, Gloria, Zennor.

Violet, Sally, Candice.

swirlycurl · 06/10/2014 19:05

Susannah
Laura

Or if you mean more granny-chic names:

Janet
Jill
Virginia / Ginny
Vivian
Angela
Cynthia
Valerie
Agatha
Rosemary

ACheesePuff · 06/10/2014 19:11

I like Constance (connie for short)

Or how about?

Frances
Florence
Rachael

SweetsForMySweet · 06/10/2014 19:12

Bromwyn
Constence

You could have a look at the old census/family tree records for inspiration too

Lillian
Henrietta
Philomena
Paula
Geraldine
Gabrielle
