We were originally going with Laurel for our DD, but DH discovered this today and really likes it, but I'm a little unsure - what are MN's opinions?
He really likes the meaning of it and it does fit our family - it means horse trainer.

yes, don't saddle her with this. Sorry if we've ridden roughshod over this idea but you need to rein it in.

stinkingbishop · 07/10/2014 13:53

Bailey would be rather cool. Or Billie.

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 07/10/2014 13:54

Have you thought of Bailiff?

squoosh · 07/10/2014 13:56

or Bail Bondsman.

Pastamancer · 07/10/2014 13:56

Bazinga?

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 07/10/2014 13:56

How about Baillie? One of my first boyfriends was Andrew Baillie. Always liked that spelling.

Not a fan of Baylor, no.

ArsenicFaceCream · 07/10/2014 13:59

Or Balliol?

If you are going to be named after a uni.....

squatcher · 07/10/2014 14:00

A big no, to Baylor - I don't like the look or sound of the word at all.

Laurel is nice though, even though it's annoyingly rampant in my garden.

serialgrannie · 07/10/2014 14:06

Sorry OP, but you have asked for opinions and for once they are unanimous. Why would you name a child (saddle it for life) with a name universally disliked? If you don't care, why ask opinions? I really hope this is a wind-up, for the baby's sake.

GilbertBlytheWouldGetIt · 07/10/2014 14:44

Sorry but it's bloody awful. Of all the beautiful names in the entire world you could choose for a little girl.

Sounds like you thought Taylor was over used so made up a similar name. Which is what people will think.

MerryMarigold · 07/10/2014 14:45

I fear the more we scream 'no', the more it's going to grow on her!

usualnamechanger · 07/10/2014 14:48

Gaylord sounds better. And laurel means bay leaf in Spanish.

BonnieWeeJeannieMcCall · 07/10/2014 15:34

It's not just Gaylord that sounds better - everything sounds better than Baylor.

Every time she tells someone her name, she will get a WTF? reaction.

WittyUsername102 · 07/10/2014 16:04

Chachah, I thought everyone loved Laurel (as I believe everyone on my Laurel thread said they did), so hearing people not liking it kind of popped my bubble, so regardless of if we chose Baylor or not I don't think we will be using Laurel. DH however really loves Baylor, and of course I love him, it's just nice to see him really like a name.

MerryMarigold - My own name is pretty much unanimously loved/popular (top 100 for a long time), but personally I hate it, so I changed it. She and my other DC are all welcome to change their names if they don't like it (as did DD1).

Have you thought about Balonz? I hear it's ancient Surrey.

Whatisaweekend · 07/10/2014 17:38

Makes me think of baleful. Awful, sorry. Laurel is lovely though!

TheHouseatWhoCorner · 07/10/2014 17:51

Hang on a minute. So you're not using Laurel because a few people didn't like it.
So by that logic you'll only go with a name that has unanimous approval. Which Baylor doesn't.Confused

burgatroyd · 07/10/2014 17:56

I thought GOT too!

Its unpleasant.

How about Phillipa? Means horse lover

Or Damaris which means heifer?

Pastperfect · 07/10/2014 18:00

Baylor is a contestant on the current series of survivor.

I would recommend never naming your DC after a reality TV show contestant

WittyUsername102 · 07/10/2014 18:27

TheHouseatWhoCorner - I already explained that.

OP posts:
WittyUsername102 · 07/10/2014 18:35

Pastperfect - I don't know where DH got it from but he doesn't watch much TV so I doubt that.. but I googled the show and there are many many popular names on there.

magicalmrmistofelees · 07/10/2014 18:44

So you either want a name that every single person likes, or one that no one likes except your DH? In that case I think you're going to have to go with Baylor, as you're never going to get unanimous approval on any other name.

heartscakescandles · 07/10/2014 19:00

Hearts, I think your first boyfriend might now be married to one of my friends! Do you live in Shropshire?

I don't like Baylor sorry. But I like laurel :)

WittyUsername102 · 07/10/2014 19:03

magicalmrmistofelees no, I want a name that both I, DH and the DC like most importantly, and a name that goes with the middle names we like, and a name with a meaning we like. And yes, it would be nice if other people liked it too.

heartscakescandles · 07/10/2014 19:07

Witty if you're not sure about laurel don't use it :) I like it but it's your name.

I think Baylor sounds very masculine and the other thing is, as someone with a vvvvv unusual name, it sort of takes away any sort of anonymity. Quite hard to explain but for instance I had a hard time at work a few years back. I left that job but it actually haunted me because people had heard about 'this woman called Baylor' and remembered the name and applies it to me when I introduced myself.

I'm going for fairly normal standard names for my child for this reason.

It's just something I don't think everybody thinks of when choosing a name.
