We were originally going with Laurel for our DD, but DH discovered this today and really likes it, but I'm a little unsure - what are MN's opinions?
He really likes the meaning of it and it does fit our family - it means horse trainer.

It's a truly ugly name!

WittyUsername102 · 06/10/2014 16:48

Yes that was me unless there was another, everyone on there seemed to like it but now I'm not so sure if everyone really does.

Earl-bow? I could get on board with that!

OP, Laurel is a lovely name. It's rare but it's one most people have heard of.

HesterShaw · 06/10/2014 16:51

Is it really Anglo-Saxon though?
Wulf
Eadwacer
Ethelred
Edith
Aethelstan
And, er, Baylor.

Baylor

It's a very conservative, Christian (Baptist) here in the States, for example premarital sexual activity is banned on campus. Bonkers place!

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 06/10/2014 16:58

Baylor is a surname, that's how the university got its name, from the surname of the founder. There have been other notable people with the surname too.

squoosh · 06/10/2014 16:58

It sounds like some long forgotten occupation name.

Was a baylor .........

a)someone who threw buckets of boiling oil over attackers climbing up the castle walls.

b)an itinerant medic who removed boils from bum cheeks

c)the person responsible for topping up the sawdust on brothel floors

ConcreteElephant · 06/10/2014 16:59

Laurel is lovely. Where I grew up, in the SW, a child called Baylor would just get called Twine or something equally 'hilarious' - it's a bit too out there for me I'm afraid.

squoosh · 06/10/2014 17:00

Oooh, that Baylor University sounds fun with a capital 'Not very fun at all actually'.

HesterShaw · 06/10/2014 17:01

Careful squoosh, they'll be offering to pray to save your damned soul if you carry on.

moxon · 06/10/2014 17:03

witty - do stick with laurel, then. You've had lots of happy responses for it! :)
I have no idea about Baylor's origins, but it does come up in my autocorrect on my phone ( Hmm !), so I guess you can placate your dh and use it as a middle name? Middle names are often weird...

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 06/10/2014 17:04

Oh and sorry OP, but Baylor does not mean horse trainer.

It is a spelling variant of Bailor (which is from French), meaning "one who delivers goods", and it comes from the legal term (with a bailor being the person who has paid someone's bail).

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 06/10/2014 17:07

I knew this 'dictionary of surnames' book would come in handy one day!

squoosh · 06/10/2014 17:08

Hester they'll need to do a lot of praying to revive the dusty husk that is my soul!

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 06/10/2014 17:09

Squoosh - that's made me chuckle like a mad woman.

Baylor is the kind of school that largely attracts Duggar types!

WittyUsername102 · 06/10/2014 17:11

TessOfTheFurbyvilles - are you sure? Everywhere I've seen online says horse trainer, and names have multiple meanings (in different languages I mean, but maybe in the same language too).

howtodrainyourflagon · 06/10/2014 17:11

Speaking as someone who has given all her dc anglo saxon names, baylor is not a word I have come across. It doesn't have the right form for anglo saxon English. Are you sure it's old English? If you are looking for OE names I'm happy to help Smile

moxon · 06/10/2014 17:11

squoosh you're obviously underestimating: the Power of Baylor

enormouse · 06/10/2014 17:12

Makes me think of game of thrones -Great Sept of Baelor.

squoosh · 06/10/2014 17:17

They're praying for all of us right now! That sex snubbing godliness is invading my heathen form.

Saaaaaave me, from their praaayers.......

Baylor?
OTheHugeManatee · 06/10/2014 17:18

What about Balonz?

moxon · 06/10/2014 17:19

Heathens are the best sort of thens. The Baylorians know not what they do.
...
Oooooh: Baylorian for a boy!

squoosh · 06/10/2014 17:22

The Baylorians

Grin

I'd rather take my chances with the Praetorians.

HesterShaw · 06/10/2014 17:23

They know. They have heard our mockery

Sorry OP. I don't mean to be mean. This thread has taken an unexpected turn, unusual in Baby Names.

moxon · 06/10/2014 17:28

I think the OP senses the joy she has brought us. Grin
