We were originally going with Laurel for our DD, but DH discovered this today and really likes it, but I'm a little unsure - what are MN's opinions?
He really likes the meaning of it and it does fit our family - it means horse trainer.

moxon - Nope not Welsh! Born in England.

Damn you gast, I've got that bloody song about the combine harvester going through my head now.

Fwiw I think combi is starting to grow on me - it's quite feminine and you could hyphenate it. Combi-Boilor, Combi-Arvesta.

AnnieOnAMapleLeaf · 08/10/2014 22:31

moxon yes I am Canadian. Forgive me, but I don't understand the wink. My caffeine levels are dangerously low at the moment and my brain is not working. Wink

moxon · 09/10/2014 00:21

Annie - as neither Canadian nor American I was desperately trying to intimate at the somewhat acrimonious, jibing relationship I have in the past perceived between the two great nations of that continent. It didn't work.
Ahem, and that is not to suggust that Mexico is not also a great nation from that continent.

moxon · 09/10/2014 00:28

I think in many countries in Africa a people carrier type vehicle is known as a combi... For its verbal fleetness it could be the new Nike? There are not enough Nike's these days anyway. Nike Baylor Combi-Arvesta sounds pretty decent to me.

atticusclaw · 09/10/2014 00:45

Will Baylor even be pronounced in the way you want it to be?

Initially I looked at it and read bay lore. Which sounds like a character from Star Trek. Then I read it as bayluh which (perhaps not in the US but certainly around here) would be "bayluh hay" at school.

Its definitely not pretty and feminine though.

I am also shocked at triple X alexxxis. Poor thing. Why do people give their children such horrendous names?

AnnieOnAMapleLeaf · 09/10/2014 02:35

Ah I see now moxon! Sorry, I was not at my brightest earlier. The idea that Canucks and 'Mericans have a strained relationship has been bandied about for years likely since we Canadians kicked their butts six ways from Sunday in 1812. Grin

But in all honesty, I have never experienced it. Canadian airports accepted numerous American flights during 9/11 and provided accommodation to all passengers. Americans seemed incredibly grateful for the assistance. Hardly an acrimonious relationship, eh?

I for one love my neighbours to the south, even if they can't spell "neighbors" Wink

Your DH heard it at work.
Baylor football is currently 1st in the Big Twelve. Someone must have been talking about football.
Next Saturday the Baylor Bears are at home to the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs.

It is going to sound very agricultural with the American rhotic R.

moxon · 09/10/2014 07:06

Texas Christian University Horned Frogs? Really?

moxon · 09/10/2014 07:10

Grin Annie
atticus I am also pronouncing it bay-lore. It's like folklore, only you use bay leaves. Grin Or laurel leaves, if you wish. What? I hear you all sigh: laurel? Oh what a lovely name! OP have you considered the name Laurel at all?

mathanxiety · 09/10/2014 07:10

Tis true Smile.

(The horned frog is actually a lizard. They are the state reptile of Texas.)

moxon · 09/10/2014 07:13

Oh math - I thought horns were evil. Guess the Texas Christian university football team is happy to channel Satan in the name of sports. It is a religion of sorts, I guess. Confused

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 09/10/2014 09:11

I wouldn't choose Baylor, but it sounds like being in America makes a difference - compared to the list from the OP's DD's class it's positively ordinary!

And is the sound really that awful? I think names with "bert" in, for instance, sound much uglier.

nicename · 09/10/2014 09:23

It makes me think of 'bale-o-hay' then that triggers the Wurzles song. Not good. Or as someone has already pointed out 'one who bails/bales (sp?) out'.

MerryMarigold · 09/10/2014 09:25

I think if you are in the US, the Texan University will be too much of an association, Especially if they are big in Sport.

treadheavily · 09/10/2014 09:30

This has to be a joke. No one could genuinely think Baylor was a nice name.

Near here is a legal firm called Bay Law which is inoffensive if dull, but on a child??

TheWanderingUterus · 09/10/2014 09:49

I really don't like Baylor. Pretty much for all the reasons put forward above.

And I feel a bit sorry for little Jessabell which is too close to Jezebel for my liking,

Rosa · 09/10/2014 09:50

MAd name and I thought it was a boys name to be honest ...

andmyunpopularopionis · 09/10/2014 09:56

Sounds GOT for me too.. Baelor the Blessed

People will think she is named after a character in a book. Like Khaleesi and Tyrion

DidoTheDodo · 09/10/2014 13:08

Doesn't 'Rosalind' mean something about horses?

I'm afraid I'm another one who really dislikes Baylor and I also thought it was a boy's name.

ExitPursuedByABear · 09/10/2014 13:31

Do what you like OP

shameless place mark

TheWanderingUterus - I think Jessabell is cute.

I think if we use it, the middle name will be Grace or Elizabeth.

OP posts:
mathanxiety · 09/10/2014 18:26

If you fancy something to do with horses, then Philippa (or Pippa) would fit the bill. It means 'lover of horses'.

Jessa is cute, Bell(e) is cute, Jessabell is one consonant away from Jezebel and is therefore not cute.
