Do you ever have a particular idea in your head of how someone with a particular name will look?

This is not a name judging thread.

For example, when I imagine a child/adult called Alice I imagine them to be petite and blonde. Despite knowing dark haired Alice's, if one I don't know is mentioned. I think blonde. Possibly due to Alice in Wonderland.

Yes! Definitely! One of the names on our current shortlist is Margot and I can only imagine a dark-haired Margot. No idea why, just when I hear the name that's how I picture her.

totally agree with your alice description! Alice's look very feminine in my head... although there is a little bit of a rebellious, tomboy streak in there too. Sarah's on the other hand have dark hair and are tall and athletic. I have no idea where this idea comes from as I know Sarah's of all colourings, shapes and sizes!

Agree - although to me, Alice is dark haired because I had a friend at school with that name! However, Sarah's in my mind are always blonde even though there were many, many girls called Sarah at my school in the 70's Grin

Definitely. Obviously it doesn't bother me if the actual person doesn't match my image of the name, but I just think Alice (to use your example) is so much prettier on a blonde girl.
I'm sure when I was growing up Jasmine was a lot more popular as a name for little Indian/Pakistani girls, so I've always imagined Jasmine's looking like that, but since it's become super popular among non-Asians I also associate it with blonde curls.

I think I usually just associate the name with an image I think it would sound most pretty on :P Although I am actually blonde, so in my head most imaginary children are blonde :P OH has black hair though. Most disappointing.

DS was Luke until he was born and we saw him. we both said it didn't suit him and later, talking about it, realised it was coz he had thick black hair. I think we both had luke skywalker in our heads (not that i'm a star wars buff!)!

Yes! In fact, I was just thinking about this today as I like the name Naomi and had been considering it if dc3 is dd3...saw a Naomi in a cafe with dark hair and thought to myself that I generally associate Naomi as the name of a girl with dark hair. One dd is blonde and one a brunette...hmm...I wonder!

Alisvolatpropiis · 06/10/2014 22:21

I always imagine David's/Dave's to be dark haired

For ages my DD's name was wrong to me because she is blonde and her name is a dark-haired one to me! I called her Poppy instead for about a year (come to think of it, you'd think that would be a dark-hair name too!)

My mum insists my favourite girls name can only work on a blonde child.

The closest I'm likely to get to a blonde child is a red head! Both my DH and I are dark, with red haired family members on both sides.

I am of course going to duly ignore her if I ever get to use the name
