Help please!!!we love Sofia but hate the shortened name of 'Soph'!

I thought Soph would be used as a shortened of Sophie rather than Sofia but I wasn't sure!

What do you think? Will Sofia be shortened to Soph?

I'm having a c section tomorrow so I feel like I have run out of time!!

Thanks in advance xxx??

Kids will always shorten names. Sorry but I think it would get shortened to soph, which is a shame as Sophia is a lovely name.

However my brother is Matthew and my dm was always insistent that he was called that instead of matt, so none of the family have ever shortened it and even his friends learnt to call him Matthew if they were at house, even though they called him matt most of the time so it depends how you feel about it shortened by others when you're not there.

Also when they are babies most people are led by the parents - I would never presume to shorten a baby's name if the parents only used the full version.

Good luck for tmw!

The Sofia's I know are either shortened to Fia or are still Sofia. I think both are lovely.

Good luck tomorrow.

No, I don't think she will be Soph. We have an Isabella because we had to be sure we liked all abbreviations. She is still Isabella - children / adults just take our word for it.

I obviously can't speak for teenage years but if you want her to be a Sofia then just stick with that. People take your lead.

Good luck tomorrow!

Yes would be shortened to Soph or Fee, but still adorable, I think.
Good luck tommorow, you'll be grandSmile

I have a nine year old one, she's never been called Soph. She either gets Sofia or Fia. All her friends call her Sofia, it's only a few family members that call her Fia. Good luck, hope all goes well.

Thanks Ladies....that's really helpful, I guess as long as we are prepared to correct people we should be okay! Fia is cute too ?? x

I've got a sofia and she's always called sofia or fifi apart from by me,I call her Bob I don't know why HmmGrin

If you don't like the shortned version of any name then stay away from it. After all it's her name and if she (when older) opts to be known as Soph then that's her choice.
Congratulations by the way.

SoonToBeSix · 02/10/2014 23:52

Yes , when she is a teenager it will be.

mammmamia · 02/10/2014 23:53

My niece is Sofia, she's only one and no one calls her Soph. I call her Fifi Smile

mathanxiety · 03/10/2014 05:52

I know several Sofia, Sophia and Sophies. One Sophie answers to Sofa. The rest are Sofia, Sophia and Sonia.

Hersetta427 · 03/10/2014 14:16

I think she will be Sofia whilst she is relatively young, however at secondary school age 13/14 you are kidding yourself if you think her freinds won't call her Soph.

We didn't call DD Hannah as I didn't want it shortened to Han - we met a couple on holiday when I was 6 month pregnant and she said now she is older her daughter Hannah, was always called Han by her friends.

mathanxiety · 03/10/2014 15:46

Hope all went well today Flowers

I know it's a bit late but fwiw, I know two Sophias and neither of them is Soph - people always use their full name. I think it is because the stress is on the FI/PHI syllable so you don't really have the Soph sound at the beginning of the name - the o is more of a schwa, if you see what I mean. The Sophies I know do get called Soph or Sophes though.

Hope everything went well today!
