I swear every child under 5 I've met in the past year have been called Jack or Isla. Failing that, Josh or Isabelle.

Lovely names but so bored of them. Anyone else bored of any other names?

Isla, tullulah, Florence are all very popular here

NormHonal · 28/09/2014 21:35

One of my DCs has one of the names being mentioned repeatedly on this thread.

Was always going to be the name we used, as it's a family name.

Yes, there are loads of them in DC's year but DH and I are clear on the reasons we chose the name and don't have any regrets.

And, as it happens, the name fits DC's personality perfectly.

If it weren't a family name I probably wouldn't have chosen it (other DC has a less common name), but .

I also happen to know a child with a name that is really not-at-all common, and yet there are three of them in our (not-big) school.

FatAmy · 28/09/2014 21:36

No, I am not lacking imagination and was not following a trend when I named DD- I just adore her name. There's some really horrid comments on this thread.

burgatroyd · 28/09/2014 21:39

norm what is this not so common name shared by three children?

I would be shocked if there were three kids called Murgatroyd at dc's school. Hmm

PoohBearsHole · 28/09/2014 21:40

one of my dcs names is one here, named after someone. dry special to DH and I. if dc turns put like the person we named them after then there won't be anything common about my dc or boring! And as for popular and overheard, dc is the ONLY one in the school with that name.

don't think that being given and unusual name is a gift, often people don't get it rig (30+ years of experience in this) it is quite often a bit of a curse!

Cannotbelieveit · 28/09/2014 21:44

How will I sleep tonight knowing people on MN still don't like the name Hunter? Wink

ethelbrown · 28/09/2014 21:44

So odd to keep seeing my own name cropping up here! It was neither popular nor regarded as 'gorgeous' when I was born, in the mid-seventies. I knew/ know no-one of my generation with the same name and always hankered after something more contemporary.I like my name now ...though feel it has been sullied by over-use!
So many people have remarked in the last, say, 10 years on my 'lovely' name- when few people thought it was lovely in the past (except, presumably, my parents). It's so true that our tastes are informed by trends.

burgatroyd · 28/09/2014 21:51

ethel is your name Ethel?

KERALA1 · 28/09/2014 21:57

Eve/Eva/Evie/Ellie/ella/isabel(la)/Amelia/lily most girls at dds school called one of these names

Canshopwillshop · 28/09/2014 22:02

I love my very classic but very popular children's names - they mean something to our family and I couldn't care less if someone else considers them unimaginative. I will just feel sorry for the kid who has the very imaginative/witty/unusual name thought up by his/her very with it parents!

girliefriend · 28/09/2014 22:02

These threads are so mean Sad

Honestly what is the point?

Other than to make some people feel shit about their choice of name and to make other people feel superior about theirs Confused Lovely Hmm

My dd was named after her 100yo Great Grandmother and her name has been repeatedly slated on this thread Sad

shitatusernames · 28/09/2014 22:02

Oh god, dd2 12 weeks is Amelia, always loved the name, dd2 is Rhiannon but gets called Rhianna

KERALA1 · 28/09/2014 22:08

If popularity doesn't bother you fine. I grew up with a dull popular name and didn't want that for my dds. And not picking from the top 10 doesn't mean choosing a bonkers name like moonunit or princess. There are hundreds of perfectly lovely decent names that are under used. Swap lily Amelia Isabel eve tedium for Mary, Natasha, Zoe or Tess for example.

cleoteacher · 28/09/2014 22:12

Iam debating this with dh at the moment. We are expecting dd1 in February and I love the name Isla but I am put off calling my dd it as it is now so popular and in the top 5 names. Not just that, I constantly hear it as I am a teacher but also in toddler groups and at the playground when I am with ds1.

Ktay · 28/09/2014 22:14

Tess dd1 has a "special" name and was one of 2 in preschool/infants and I was genuinely delighted. I am always tickled when I hear her called "" and then her last initial. We chose it because we thought it was pretty more than anything else. Her younger sister will prob be one of several in her class.

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 28/09/2014 22:14

KERALA1 - but if everyone swaps the popular names, for other names, then some of those other names become the popular names surely?!

Ktay · 28/09/2014 22:15

Argh she's not called " ", that would be special! Slightly left-field old lady name though

ethelbrown · 28/09/2014 22:15

burga- no, thankfully, it isn't!(I think it will be a while before ethel is popular again)

Canshopwillshop · 28/09/2014 22:16

Kerala - your 'lovely decent' name is someone else's tedium and vice versa! Can't you see that?

Rivercam · 28/09/2014 22:16

Harry,
George

I was recently cooing over a baby. I asked the baby's name. The mum said it was , but she wanted to call it , but didn't because xyz was really popular. I felt sad for the mum as she felt she was denied her number one choice.

If you want to,call a baby a name, then use it, regardless of whether rots no. 1 or no 101 in the baby name charts ( providing it's not a silly name like Fifa, Ikea etc).

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 28/09/2014 22:19

Ktay - I didn't meant to imply that everyone who chooses a less popular name, does so to avoid the whole Jack A. situation, I'm sure some parents are fully prepared that someone else just might have had the same idea.

I'm just baffled by the ones who never consider it, like Anya lady I mentioned.

I always say, unless someone is choosing their child's name by pulling Scrabble letters out the bag, you just never know! Wink

littlesupersparks · 28/09/2014 22:20

I've heard of too many Dexters recently. For me it's not about the 'classics' - I would say that as my eldest was one of 3 in his nursery class lol - it's the 'unusual' names that then become popular. I just think if you want to pick something different go the extra step lol.

I have to say I found it nigh on impossible to choose my boys' names and I'm still not really convinced by them shrug I think I'm happier they've got 'classic' names I'm unsure of than wacky ones on balance though.

Ktay · 28/09/2014 22:22

Ah ok. If I ever have a surprise no 3 I might try your scrabble idea Wink

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 28/09/2014 22:27

Perhaps take out the Q and X first though! Wink

Gavlarrr · 28/09/2014 22:28

So glad my baby girls name isn't here was worrying it was becoming too popular!
