I swear every child under 5 I've met in the past year have been called Jack or Isla. Failing that, Josh or Isabelle.

Lovely names but so bored of them. Anyone else bored of any other names?

Amelia, Olivia, Ellie, Ava, Lily.

Middle names Rose or May/Mai.

Noah, Thomas, Alfie, Harry.

GColdtimer · 28/09/2014 20:21

Have to say thenewclassic, can't say I like any of the names on your list. Perhaps that is because I don't live in London.

beavington · 28/09/2014 20:22

Oh no lots of Evie's and Ava's on here. Are people sick of Eva? Be honest!

It was dgm name which was why we chose!

beavington · 28/09/2014 20:23

Ralph is so imaginitive Hmm

GColdtimer · 28/09/2014 20:24

Does it matter beavington if you like it? I honestly hate these type of bitchfest threads. I love eve and Eva for what it's worth.

Bigbagofchips · 28/09/2014 20:32

Boys - Sam, Ben and William
Girls - Ellie and Amiee / Amy

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 28/09/2014 20:34

DS1 (14) is Jack.

According to some on here, this means I lack imagination.

I don't give two hoots though.

Jack was named for both of my grandfathers; one of whom is John (known as Jack) and the other has John as his middle name.

For some people, when naming their children, it isn't about trying to be "different", some of us like to honor family and friends.

And as a graphic designer and artist, I can assure you, I have plenty of imagination thank you very much. I wouldn't have got far in my career without it!!

burgatroyd · 28/09/2014 20:35

twofalls bitchfest? This is a name thread, on mn!

I am not sick of these names but am curious why people all want to give their kid the same name?

I don't agree with the 'its popular for a reason' argument. Its popular because whether we like it or not we follow trends.

Hammerandnails · 28/09/2014 20:36

Isabelle, Isabella, Isobel, gorgeous names but hear them constantly. Also Ellie, so many Ellie's, I'm not keen on the name at all.

TheNewClassic · 28/09/2014 20:45

twofalls sorry did I say one of your sons names?

As for Ralph I wouldn't pick it myself but its much better than all the Jack and Harry's sorry.

If people do not like the names I said of the newly born children of people I know then I am sure that wasnt the point of the thread. I am just pointing out the types of names I am around and that friends wouldnt call their children Jack type names. Ever.

GColdtimer · 28/09/2014 20:46

Comments like "I'm in London and none of my friends would call their children anything like this" are pretty bitchy.

And why does anyone care what anyone else calls their children, these threads are always going to make someone feel bad.

And as for the names being unimaginative - so what?

And no, neither of my children's names have appeared on the list so am not taking it personally.

AmeliaPeabody · 28/09/2014 20:46

To say people have heard them so much they're bored of them is one thing. But I don't agree that choosing popular and/or classic names means the parent is lacking imagination etc etc

Those congratulating themselves on choosing an 'unusual' name may well find those names the subject of a similar thread 20+ years from now Grin

Amelia is a classic by the way Sad

GColdtimer · 28/09/2014 20:49

Nope. TheNewClassic. I have two dds and their names have not appeared anywhere on this thread.

What if someone in your circle of friends did call their child Jack. Would you mark them down for it?

Thurlow · 28/09/2014 20:50

Oh, this started ok Sad

I didn't think most of the early posters were saying they didn't like the names, just that they seem to have heard a lot lately?

As thecaroline says, if we're looking at adults, if I meet another Laura, Claire or Matt... Names do have patterns and cycles, and sometimes a few names seem extremely popular in some areas.

burgatroyd · 28/09/2014 20:52

Amelia must be a classic because its been in no. 1 spot for yonks.

I know people with a common name who love their name. And those who hate it.

I do love an unusual name though...even if it's hideous.

And I agree. In London I don't know any Evie or Milly's but there are loads up North.

There are more unusual names in London. It is the capital.

AmysTiara · 28/09/2014 20:53

Olivia and Oliver, Ella, Emily, Jack,Ben, Sam.

I don't dislike any of these names except Olivia and Oliver but they are everywhere.

scarletforya · 28/09/2014 20:53

Matilda

TheNewClassic · 28/09/2014 20:53

What is wrong with saying a name is unimaginative?

If a friend said they were calling their child I would be very surprised. What does mark them down me? Is there some sort of point system.

GColdtimer · 28/09/2014 20:53

Sorry thurlow. I just hate the snobbery on some if these threads. If you like a name use it. If you don't want a popular name, avoid those in the top 20 or 30 most popular list ( and if you want an unusual one, go hang around London Grin).

AmysTiara · 28/09/2014 20:54

I do prefer all the popular names to Ralph and Milan though

AlwaysHoldingOnToStars · 28/09/2014 20:57

I wouldn't say I'm bored of them, but working in a school means that there are some names where the children are always known by their first name and surname/initial.

I'm glad mine don't have to be called by their first and surname.

Popular boys names here are Joshua, Alfie and Dylan.

Girls names are Lily, Megan and Ellie.

theendoftheendoftheend · 28/09/2014 21:22

I know sisters called Ellie (shortened/nickname) and Isabel, their DM chose the names when she was a young teen it just so happens they were popular when she had her DC. She's neither unimaginative or 'just following trends'.
I think this thread is a bit gloaty and cruel.

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 28/09/2014 21:24

At least those of us who use popular names, are fully prepared for the fact our children might be one of several in a school.

However, parents who choose "special" names for their precious offspring, are never quite prepared for that moment when someone else has had the same idea as them.

I know a mother who named her daughter Anya - this was eight years ago - and when her daughter started school at the age of 4, the mother was horrified (and I mean genuinely horrified) to discover not only were there two other girls named Anya in the school, there was one other Anya in the new reception intake (60 pupils).
