I swear every child under 5 I've met in the past year have been called Jack or Isla. Failing that, Josh or Isabelle.

Lovely names but so bored of them. Anyone else bored of any other names?

Moomin There are thousands of names in between the super popular and the likes of Ermintrude and Hester. There aren't only two options, ten-a-penny or way out wacky.

My DCs names ranked outside 800 and 1400th or something like that when I last looked (couple of years ago). Neither are wacky, crazy or weird, they aren't 'made up' names, and they don't have bizarre spellings. Just normal solid names. There are thousands of really good names out there.

TheNewClassic · 30/09/2014 17:56

Weird and wacky names..?? Elijah and Isaiah??
Milan is not made up.

Trey isn't made up. It means three. You think names are made up purely because its not your style of name. Now that is pretty bitchy. I guess to you some of these ethnicsounding names are just wacky or made up.

Montsti · 30/09/2014 18:00

I choose names that I like best and it just so happens that they are popular, classic names. I don't care if that makes me boring as I'm happy with my choices! I have to say I do snigger though when "friends" criticise my name choices as they want to be unique and then end up with more than one in their child's class??

Fwiw I do get confused sometimes with the current trend of "sameish" girls names I.e. Tilly, Lilly, Milly, Molly, Holly, Polly, Poppy etc...but I do like them and think they're pretty names and I'm not bored as such with them. I just forget whose called which...

crossandcrosser · 30/09/2014 18:02

I often wonder if I will have GC called Derek, Malcolm, Brian, Pamela & Maureen Grin

HoltBegins · 30/09/2014 18:06

NewClassic are you aiming that at me? You're either way off the mark or have me confused with another poster. I don't think Elijah and Isaiah are weird or wacky or Milan and Trey made up. I really like them actually.

itsbetterthanabox · 30/09/2014 18:08

Ruby, poppy, Alfie, Freddie, Isla, esme, Eden. Double first names that have a rose or may as the second name!

minkah · 30/09/2014 18:08

Olivia, Jack, Chloe, Dylan, Jayden, Florence, Alex, Oliver.

TheNewClassic · 30/09/2014 18:08

Hot no sorry it was not you. It was at some of the pp comments regarding the names as weird and wacky etc.

Blondebrunette1 · 30/09/2014 18:09

"I live in London..." Interesting how London is far too cool to use "those" names. Hilarious but fabulous you are so proud of your post code. I think this thread is great, popular names are popular because they are nice but I love more unusual names too. In my honest opinion a child makes a name not the others way around.x

TheNewClassic · 30/09/2014 18:11

Blonde that isn't actually what I meant. But take it as you will. Some names are more or less popular depending on region.

HoltBegins · 30/09/2014 18:11

Ah ok Smile

GColdtimer · 30/09/2014 19:26

Not at all Kerela. I just feel for a couple of posters who are now anxious because of this thread. Neither of my dds names have been mentioned on this thread. FWIW I didn't name dd2 Emily because I thought it was too popular even though I loved it. But that was my choice and I just think this thread is being a bit sneery at parents who choose to call their children popular names. You might not do it but why look down on those that do.

Portlypenguin · 30/09/2014 19:44

I think its quite regional. Personally i can't stand isla/islay etc or evie or kaiden/jayden/kyan or anything-mae.

However, thats my opinion and if people want to choose those names its up to them.

I chose a boring unoriginal classic name for DS because we liked it and i wanted him to have a recognisable spellable name!

I don't find this thread weird. People have (mostly) been polite and just musing over current trends

birdofthenorth · 30/09/2014 22:06

I think these things are highly regional. For me Ava and Harry are the two which I would have said I liked before breeding, but three DCs worth if nursery friends, school friends, swimming friends, dancing friends etc later and sadly I almost just here "blah" when a child or their parent tells me they have these names. Which I do feel sad/ guilty about as they are lovely names. But we seriously have had "not Ava B from swimming, Ava B from after school club" conversations. And there are 3 Harry's in a swimming class of 6 toddlers. Two girls (one an Ava!), my DS (moderately popular name -bottom half of top 100), and three Harry's. They are "big Harry, little Harry, and curly Harry", poor boys!

minniemaus · 01/10/2014 14:17

Interesting thread. I do think that some names lose some of their appeal and interest simply because I hear them all the time.

Here it is Eve, Ellie, Sophie, Charlie, Harry, Sam, Finn in particular!

pughpughbarneymcgrue · 01/10/2014 23:02

Harry, Josh, Alfie, Finley, Stanley,

Lila, Lyla, Leila, Layla, etc, Megan, Evie, Bethan, Ella, Jasmine, Caitlin

pughpughbarneymcgrue · 01/10/2014 23:06

Tom and Ben - middle class cliches
Toby and Barney - the next rung of the social ladder, and every bit as cliched.

JenMcCready80 · 02/10/2014 02:14

I love the name Orla definitely my favourite. However, I'd love my mum's name Sheelagh as a middle name. Do they sound strange together? Orla Sheelah? I could go for Orla Katherine. Or Rose/Rosalind Sheelagh?
Interested to hear thoughts!

Florrieboo · 02/10/2014 03:57

Where we live the name Jack is so so popular, I am almost more surprised when I see or hear of a baby boy that isn't called Jack rather than when I hear of one called anything else.
Girls names are the Amelia, Milly, Emily, Sophie and Charlotte variety.

Coughle · 02/10/2014 03:59

As soon as I saw the thread title I thought Isla.

Also sick of:
Ava
Evie
Amelia
Liam
Luca/Lucas

KERALA1 · 02/10/2014 07:31

Three of my friends have eves now 7 and two have name regret and said if they had realised how popular they wouldn't have picked it.

EugenesAxe · 02/10/2014 07:42

Although I love him I admit my DS has quite a boring name. I will list it and all others I'm a little 'used to':

Isabella
Olivia
Florence
Sebastian
Oscar
Samuel

But after reading this:

In the last few months we've had willow, ernie, betsy, bay, sterling, maya and bellamie.

I'll take all of the boring ones over 'interesting' alternatives.

SpaceStation · 02/10/2014 08:15

I'd take all of the interesting ones over the boring ones. "Baby Ernie", fantastic! :o

Maya is on my boring list though, know loads of them.
