Any thoughts on Hunter?

Is it a bit too American?

Does the fact I'm a vegetarian make it a strange choice? (I may be reading too much into that!)

I really like it, but I'm not sure how it would be received.

It is quite American but if you like it don't let that stand in your way.

One thing to consider is that it will likely be shortened to 'Hunt' which might give me vague concerns about the rhyming slang...

I would think of Hunter from Gladiarors #old

Yeah, all I can think of is Hunter S Thompson and Hunter from Gladiators (also old). Both very different connotations!

I also agree that the Hunt bit might be an issue.

What about Wolf?

I like it, it reminds me of Hunter Abbott, but then I like British Touring Cars.

Oh just remembered that Carter was a potential middle name for DS. And Parker is similar. What is it that you like about Hunter?

I generally like more unusual names, but I really don't like hunter. It's a bit like calling your child "butcher".

I love it and if I had a son I would call him that.

My dad had an uncle hunter and it turns out that entire generation of his family had hunter as a middle name, after a grandmothers maiden name, so I would count it as a family name.

Super American but then I know loads of pro-hunting Americans so it makes sense. Also fits with the American surname as first name trend (some of the youngsters I know: Carter, Cooper, Miller, Harrison, Clark, Cole, Colton, Carlton, Sullivan, Jackson).

I'd find it a bit strange for a veggie to choose it (unless you're pro hunting in a Michael Pollan foraging kind of way!). It also reminds me of wellies (hunters are the welly of choice here in Northern NJ just like when we lived in the UK).

I had this on my short list when I was pregnant then I watched Paranormal Activity an the baby in it was called Hunter scared the shit out of me.

My problem is that if you have or subsequently have a DD, I would always think of her as "Gatherer" so would always have to pause before saying her name.

I love it but I think you would have to have a strong surname to go with it.

Bit random, but what about Huntley/Huntlee? I'm also veggie and sounds like a good strong name but without the carnivorous connection. Also lee is an option for nn.

I posted several messages about this name on the thread about the name Austin. I love the name Hunter but yes, I think it's far too American. I've had to veto it from my future shortlist.

It's an occupation, not a name! And not really appropriate for someone who may be vegetarian. Doesn't even have a nice sound to it. Then there's the rhyming thing ......
