Damned dots...

I'm currently holding 2-day-old Zoë in my arms. Before we trot off and register her birth, does anyone know how much of a pain it will be to use the diaeresis marks on official documents? From last-minute Googling, I think I've worked out that she won't be able to have it on her passport but may be able to have it on her birth certificate. Will it then be a pain to have two 'official' spellings? What have all the mums of Esmës and Amëlies done? I'm already finding it a pain to use keyboard shortcuts...

I have dots but they don't appear on any of my official documents. I used the. When I filled in the forms - bank account, passport etc but they never materialised!!

My goddaughter have up trying to get the dots on official things, she's decided on Zoey now instead. I don't like that though and most people still write Zoe to her.

I think it is rubbish that diacriticals don't get put on official documents. I'd keep them if you chose them. Don't change it because "the computer says no". The computer is stupid.

Congratulations on the birth of Zoë! I have a 14 month old Zoë, I do wonder if we've given her a lifetime of dot problems... Her birth certificate is Zoë, I was surprised that her passport came back Zoe, but her EHIC card came back with Zoë. To be honest I'm still amazed that the passport didn't include it, surely it's a good identifier? I love the two dots and hoping as computer systems become even more advanced this won't happen in the future.

Keep them! I have the dots in my name and I love them. Really loved them as a kid, I thought they were special and exciting. Plus it is the correct spelling of the name IMO.

I like them, and prefer them (the dots) but for ease of life I wouldn't use them, which is a shame, as surely if she used the dots for the electricity account sign up online, then called and said her name was Zoe bloggs would it connect Zoe (with dots) to Zoe (with no dots?)

Thanks for all the input. Huge apologies for the keyboard shortcut error with the accents. As long as that's the worst mistake I've made in the three days since giving birth, I won't feel too bad.
