Penelope

yay or nay?

I love that it's quite unique (certainly where we are), it's girly and pretty and think it goes well with Noah and Sophia who we have. not madly in love with nicknames in general so we would call her Penelope but I realise others will use Penny and I actually like it.

my main concern is that it's quite long, 4 syllables so maybe a bit of a mouthful and encouraging the use of a nickname more than i'd like. also mad that there's a kardashian one but surely they won't be around forever?!!

I think it's a lovely name.

My guess is that the association with Penny from TBBT will be the more widespread current one. Together with Lady Penelope (I do think of Penelopes as cool blondes because of that!) and Penelope Pitstop.

Surfsup1 · 23/09/2014 11:38

I know 2 baby Penelopes and I LOVE it! One of them is known as Penny, the other is still Penelope and the adult Penelope I know is always called Poppy.

babyblabber · 23/09/2014 11:54

oh I love poppy too! DH vetoed it but maybe I can sneak it in this way

I used to like it but now it just makes me think of the Kardashians.

squeak2392 · 23/09/2014 14:53

I like it. It does encourage the use of Penny, but if you only ever call her that yourself and introduce her as Penelope, you should get less people calling her Penny than otherwise.

Honestly had no idea there was a Penelope Kardashian. Agreed that the big popular culture one right now is TBBT's Penny, but it's a name I've always considered pretty normal (although I've not known many) so I literally have no associations with it.

EllieBuffalo · 23/09/2014 21:23

I love it but slightly biased as I have a beautiful little Penelope! Although would recommend being comfortable with nn, DH and I only ever call her Penelope and introduce her as Penelope but we have some friends and family who just automatically call her Penny - MIL being the worst offender even introducing her once as "Penny although her parents call her Penelope, I'm not keen"!!! Angry

brunette123 · 23/09/2014 21:32

Penelope is a lovely name (less keen on Penny though)

Surfsup1 · 24/09/2014 07:39

Pop culture-wise I would think of Penelope Cruze, but then I have no idea what TBBT is!

BellMcEnd · 24/09/2014 07:42

LOVE Penelope and would have used it had I had a girl. It's also my middle name Smile

LittleBairn · 24/09/2014 08:12

I love it. We discussed it at one point and my DH worried that it might not be a career woman's name, in walked the Dr named Penelope. Grin

Alisvolatpropiis · 24/09/2014 08:39

It's lovely

heliotrope · 26/09/2014 10:45

Love it, nice sounds. Poppy as nn.

NewEraNewMindset · 26/09/2014 10:52

The only reason I say nay is because my ex boss was a Penny and was a truly hideous person to work for, total nut job. If I'd never met her I would probably think it was pretty.

pregnantpause · 26/09/2014 10:54

Beautiful name ( names actually as id love the other two as well) go for itGrin

bubalou · 28/09/2014 08:04

I love it but I hate penny as a nickname. Confused

Is that silly? I think it's one of those ones where I know a REALLY annoying penny in real life and I can't think of the name without thinking of her!

I hate it when that happens!

onepotatotwopotato · 28/09/2014 08:29

I know a little Penelope, sometimes shortened to Nell. Another option to Penny?

kellinaa · 28/09/2014 12:15

I prefer Nell as a nick name. Penny I dislike and Poppy seems a bit of a stretch (and Poppy is so popular in its own right)

My SIL called her daughter Penny specifically after The Big Bang Theory's Penny. I like Penelope and Penny though and would've considered it if my niece hadn't been born first :)

TheGirlAtTheRockShow · 30/09/2014 19:05

Love it! Wanted it for DD but DH refused. Hoping if we have another I can win DH around.
