We have a DS called A sher and are expecting a DD. Pretty much the only name DH and I both love is Amber (this is what DS would have been called if he had been a girl) but I worry the names are too similar sounding.

Any thoughts appreciated!

Hm, I'm not sure. They are definitely similar, but 'sh' and 'mb' are very different sounds. It's not like people would confuse them.

I think it's your call. Maybe it'll help if you think of calling a 3rd sibling at the same time. I don't think "Asher! Amber! Emily!" would raise my eyebrow at the park.

Sophronia · 13/09/2014 01:43

I think they're too similar.

I have an Alex and my fave boys name was Alistair, nn Ally. But we decided these were too close. When shouting one downstairs for dinner for example. Or when they are older and letters arrive for A. Surname.

I think the names mentioned in OP are too similar.

they are very similar. I know a Daisy and a Darcey and I always think it's a bit weird. I don't think i'd go for amber

Personally I don't like matching first initials, but that's just me.
If you love it use it. If you aren't sure keep looking.

I know somebody with a Maya and a Micah, and they do say that it can get confusing at times. They have to be very careful to emphasize that "k" sound. I also used to know a Kim with a brother named Tim, and she said that they basically spent their entire childhoods not knowing which one their mother was talking to.

MrsBungle · 13/09/2014 16:32

I think A sher snd Amber go nicely and aren't too samey.

weebarra · 13/09/2014 16:32

I have an Alasdair (nn Ali) and rejected Eilidh as they sounded too similar. I think Asher and Amber are ok though.

gamescompendium · 13/09/2014 17:37

I think Asher and Amber are different enough to be OK. I understand your concern though, I didn't call DD2 Elsa because it was too similar to her big sister's name. Of course now my 5 year old DD2 is not happy at all because she would LOVE to be called Elsa. Bloody Frozen.

katiegee · 13/09/2014 18:51

I think the names look similar but don't sound that similar, if that makes sense? if you like the names I think you should use them.

Frikadellen · 13/09/2014 20:23

They are fine together not to " samey" imo.. Pretty names actually both of them.

DramaAlpaca · 13/09/2014 20:24

I think they would be fine together.
