Armin?

Hi all, I am trying to decide on a name for a boy and don't have much time left! I'm southeast asian and wanted a name that is pretty obviously foreign-sounding, but not difficult to pronounce. Right now my top choice is Armin Rafael Thomas (full name). I like the name Armin, but other forums have said it reminds them of "arm and hammer" etc. I'm also worried people will just see it as "arm" + "in" and think it's stupid. I'm aware of the few associations it has, like the character from Attack on Titan, the Dutch DJ, and also the German cannibal dude :/ but associations don't bother me too much. Thoughts? Any impressions the name gives?

Was there a dictator called iddi armin? Didn't he kill thousands of people?

mymummademelistentoshitmusic · 10/09/2014 21:56

Armin, out, shake it all about.

MagnificentMaleficent · 10/09/2014 21:59

I also thought of Idi Amin. Not good IMO

Artfooldodger · 10/09/2014 22:00

Of course you realise his nickname would be Satnav??!!

MrsQueen · 10/09/2014 22:03

Makes me think of armin shimmerman (actor who plaed quark in deep space nice) which is fine, but also of the loo roll called charmin, the one with bears in the advert. Not that keen sorry.

Arno? Arlo?

Only1scoop · 10/09/2014 22:04

No armin....evil dictator Hmm

ancientbuchanan · 10/09/2014 22:08

I would assume he was German, Hermann being a common name and based on the romanised Arminius.

I quite like it and would not confuse with Idi Amin.

feathermucker · 10/09/2014 22:10

Middle name Armin you might just get away with, but it's too much like Idi Amin, the infamous dictator!

Can you have Rafael as a first name?

Vijac · 10/09/2014 22:11

Made me think of Amen i.e. the end of a prayer.

scaevola · 10/09/2014 22:19

How about Arminda?

captainbathtub · 10/09/2014 22:26

Hmm I think that would get confused as a girls name. However I like the suggestion of Arlo, maybe will consider it if people think it's better?

I know a really handsome Armin. I really like the name.

squeak2392 · 10/09/2014 22:35

It reminds me of 'ermine'. Which isn't a bad thing.
I like it though :)

isambardo · 11/09/2014 10:49

I think it's really nice. My first thought was Shimmerman

iamusuallybeingunreasonable · 11/09/2014 10:50

I keep getting Armin the Varmint

Blueistheonlycolour · 11/09/2014 11:46

Arlo is better.

UriGeller · 11/09/2014 12:00

"Armin" is how I get my 19mo to put her coat sleeves on. Grin

I LOVE Rafael though, and Arlo too.
