Penelope or Lillian

Torn between these two names for our upcoming arrival. We like the idea of having a longer formal name that can be shortened so for day to day she would be Penny or Lily. What do you prefer? Thanks!

LillianGish · 10/09/2014 20:06

Lillian of course Grin

WittyUsername102 · 10/09/2014 21:15

Lillian :)

KERALA1 · 10/09/2014 21:28

There are millions of Lily's...

Chicci1 · 10/09/2014 22:18

Hmmm. One of our concerns about lillian is that lily is too popular. Any suggestions for alternatives we might like?

I prefer Penelope 'Penny'

MrsBungle · 10/09/2014 22:31

Lilian although I'm not a massive fan of lily. I dislike Penelope intensely.

MissWimpyDimple · 10/09/2014 22:38

My 8yo is utterly obsesses with the name Penelope. She calls any story character, new toy etc Penny or Penelope.
Maybe she's onto a winner!

Mustangspirit · 10/09/2014 22:41

Penelope but I prefer Nell to Penny as a nn. Lilly is too popular for me.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 10/09/2014 22:55

Penelope (Penny) Too many Lily's the names getting boring now

looki · 10/09/2014 23:27

I'm not sure I like either. If I had to choose probably Penny because its more unused but I don't think its a particularly nice name in its own right either. Penny is, however, infinitely better than Penelope. Its a stage name to me and i can't get past the Penelope Keith association. For some odd reason, I rarely if ever associate it with Penelope Cruz.

What about Constance nickname Connie?

KERALA1 · 11/09/2014 07:00

If popularity bothers you avoid lily. There is at least one in each class here. Sadly the name has lost any charm through total over use.

Bohemond · 11/09/2014 07:27

Love Penelope but would probably go for nn Poppy. Unfortunately I am having a boy so cannot use either of my choices - Penelope or Calliope both nn Poppy.

Def happy about the boy though.

jmk8009 · 12/09/2014 14:22

I would pick Penelope.

KoalaDownUnder · 12/09/2014 14:59

I don't like Penelope at all.

Lillian, I love. But the popularity would be a factor if I were in your shoes.

TheWhispersOfTheGods · 12/09/2014 22:37

Love Penelope. Nell over Penny for me.

Lillian sounds very 80s to me for some reason, i don't like it. Love Lilith though.

bobsleighteam · 12/09/2014 22:48

My great aunt lilian had two ds, sylvia/sylvie and Vivien. I adore the name sylvie

MGFM · 14/09/2014 18:43

My friend just called her baby Penelope Eleanor and I think it is a gorgeous name. She is American and lives in Singapore but I still think it would be great in the UK.

ODearMe · 14/09/2014 18:45
