I love this name, love it, love it, love it! DH says he'll be bullied and called "gay" etc. In my experience, bullies will bully you despite what your name is (my name was top 10 when I was little and they still found a way) although I concede that some names are handing it to them on a plate, and perhaps this is one of them.
I'm just a bit sad that I won't be able to use a name I adore because of potential bullies :(
So, thoughts?

It's beautiful. Wish I could use it but My baby lost at 6 weeks into my pregnancy would have had or rather does have a brother named Gabriel on her dad's side.
It's becoming quite popular now I believe.
Congratulations!

I think it's gorgeous. Gabriel Byrne is gorgeous too. Would it really lead to bullying?

I wanted this name for DS but agree that 'gay' for life is unpleasant and inevitable. I wouldn't underestimate the power of 'silly' bullying comments to make a DCs school days a bad memory. Unfortunately, there are people out there who will think nicknames are fair game. We chose another name for DS.

Eggwhisk · 09/09/2014 18:28

My 2 year old son is called Gabriel and I still absolutely love his name, he gets called Gabe for short and I've had nothing put positive comments about his name. I think it is getting more popular as occasionally I even find personalised tat stuff with it on! When he was first born one of our friends described the name as strong but gentle which I think describes it really well. Don't give up on a name you love for something that may or may not happen in the future

curiousgeorgie · 09/09/2014 18:28

It's a fab name! I'd definitely use it Smile

AdorableAbbie · 09/09/2014 18:30

For me It's a nice name although it is not unique anymore but the name sounds good and I don't think your baby could be bullied because of his name!

RalphGnu · 09/09/2014 18:31

I love this name too! I'm almost tempted to carry on having children until I have a boy I can give it to. Grin

Leeds2 · 09/09/2014 18:40

I don't like it, but I don't think it would lead to bullying. There are quite a lot of them around in the south east.

Peaceloveandbiscuits · 09/09/2014 20:28

Oh I'm glad it's had a positive reaction! I showed DH the thread and told him he's been vetoed ;) he's now up for considering it as a middle name at least.
Leeds, I do live in the SE but hoping to move back to deepest 'Ampshire before this one goes to school!

I really like it. I think it's becoming more well known now so I don't think it would lead to bullying.

Johnogroats · 09/09/2014 23:10

Our previous AP was called Gabriel, with a French accent, and the best footballer at my sons' school is another. I like it.

Gugglebum · 10/09/2014 00:04

My 13 year old Gabriel has not had a bit of teasing about his name thus far. I don't love Gabe as a nn, we've called him Little G and then just G since he was small. It is a fantastic name that I have not regretted for a moment since he was born.

Pebbles0934 · 10/09/2014 05:32

I think it's a beautiful name and not set up for bullying?! Gabe is a nice nn. From my experience kids will bully for all sorts of reasons and what you expect them to get bullied for never seems to happen, they get picked on for something ridiculous just for the sake of it.
My husband is a William and used to get picked on and called Willy! willy! At Infant school and that name has been in the top 10 for years!
Both my children have unusual names and have never been picked on because of them but school shoes..... Well that's another story!!!! Ha ha

hatsybatsy · 10/09/2014 09:38

I know a 9 year old Gabriel. His nickname is Gabes and I'm not aware of any name related teasing.

Secondary school is ahead though - not sure what lies ahead for him?

whippetwoman · 11/09/2014 17:21

It is my father's name and also one of DS2's middle names. A classic biblical name.

Molotov · 11/09/2014 18:54

It is THE name for my son ... if I ever pluck up the courage to ttc again. Fabulous, beautiful name Smile

soapboxqueen · 11/09/2014 19:02

My ds 5 is a Gabriel. I love it. My dh mentioned the idea of being bullied because of it but quickly decided it was a pointless argument. If children are going to bully they will find something or someone to target.

Montsti · 11/09/2014 19:59

I think it's a really nice name. Wouldn't expect any bullying issues due to being called Gabriel!

areyoubeingserviced · 11/09/2014 20:02

Most beautiful male name IMHO
I couldn't use it for my ds because my brother had already used it for his ds.
I now wish I had used it as a middle name

concernedaboutheboy · 12/09/2014 09:08

I really wouldn't worry about the bullying thing. Hopefully your son will grow up thinking that being gay is a non-issue and so any name-calling wouldn't have much force.

Peaceloveandbiscuits · 12/09/2014 10:27

Agreed concernedabouttheboy.

There is one in my DDs reception class, first time I have really known anyone called it and I think it is a lovely name. It really suits the little boy. Refreshing as not a name overly used. He gets called Gabes by friends.
