Octavia or Ottilie

Love them both, and have a one syllable surname so want something a little fancy. Do you have a favourite or are they awful and it's just my preggo brain making me think daft things? Other suggestions along the same lines?

Also any suggestions for middle names? Smile

I like Octavia.

Ottilie makes me think of otters.

florascotia · 06/09/2014 10:06

I like Ottilia rather than Ottilie - but they (and Octavia) are all nice names.

Middle name? Perhaps something classic: along the lines of Mary, Caroline, Rosalind/Rosamund, Frances ...

KoalaDownUnder · 06/09/2014 10:10

I prefer Octavia. Ottilie always sounds awkward to me (Ot-Tilly? Oh-Tilly?)

Prefer Odessa to either of them.

hashtagwhatever · 06/09/2014 10:12

Ottilie

TheFantasticFixit · 06/09/2014 10:14

Ottilie is BEAUTIFUL!

NewEraNewMindset · 06/09/2014 10:25

I had never heard of the name Ottilie until I met one at a toddler group. Then suddenly they started popping up a lot. I really don't like the name if I'm honest, it's weird. So I'm going with Octavia as my preference even though it sounds a bit Private School with a pony.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 06/09/2014 10:52

I like both, today I'm leaning towards Octavia.

Try and picture yourself yelling calling sweetly across a crowded room or park. Imagine writing Christmas cards or filling out official forms.

For middle names for these maybe
Emma
Eve
Lucie
Raven
Zoe

Ham69 · 06/09/2014 11:22

Ottilie is lovely.

DitzyDonkey · 06/09/2014 11:25

Ottilie is beautiful.

ralinax294 · 06/09/2014 14:09

Ottilie is much nicer.

Sophronia · 06/09/2014 18:59

How is Ottilie actually pronounced? Is it aw-TILLY or OTT-il-ee, or another way?

Anyway, I prefer Octavia.

MsBug · 06/09/2014 19:01

Ottillie

Singmetosleepzzz · 06/09/2014 21:43

Love Ottilie, Octavia reminds me of the skoda car. Sorry!

hollie84 · 06/09/2014 22:06

They are awful unless you are terribly posh.

HollyBen · 06/09/2014 22:21

Something about Octavia makes me shudder, so a definite no for me. I like Ottille

Lunastarfish · 06/09/2014 22:29

I like both but I think Octavia has the edge.

Middle names:-

Octavia Pearl
Octavia Arabella/Isabella
Octavia Araminta

I think with a name like Octavia you need a jazzy 'posh' middle name!

Jumblebee · 06/09/2014 23:17

I also don't know how you pronounce Otillie. When I read it I pronounced it "OH-tilly" (the same way you would pronounce the O in otter only I couldn't think how to type it) which I actually quite like! Not so keen if it's pronounced with emphasis on Tilly though.

And I really don't like Octavia (sorry!) I think a lot of the name suggestions on mumsnet I've never heard in real life and they seem a bit bonkers to me (but Ovtavia is definitely NOT the worst Smile)

Gugglebum · 07/09/2014 03:01

Of the two, I prefer Octavia, Tavy as a nn is cute, I think, if she's not feeling as formal. But I was going to suggest Odessa as Koala did, there are a few nn choices, and to me it feels just a bit more wearable for any type of girl, for some reason.

sonniebonnie · 07/09/2014 09:37

I like both but prefer the -a ending of Octavia, think it sounds more feminine. Also like Ottilia.

Dazedconfused · 07/09/2014 11:22

I'm afraid octavia makes me think of the car. Never heard of Ottilie before...but I'm in Scotland and dont think the more posh/unusual names get up here as much. That said I don't really like either.

villagecorner · 07/09/2014 22:24

Ottilie

You might want to consider Cecily too x

Username12345 · 08/09/2014 13:08

I like Octavia.

Ottilie makes me think of otters.
