Need some suggestions for boys names - we're at a bit of an impasse!

DH really wants Henry. I really want Matthew. Both of us are a bit 'meh' about the others choice.

We already have a ds called James, I think we are both reasonably traditional in the names that we like. Unfortunately we seem to have each got fixated on the names above, so whenever anything else is suggested I just think but I prefer Matthew, and vice versa for dh.

Just looking for a bit of inspiration really to help get us out of this rut!

I love both of your names! Ones I'd consider similar are:

Daniel
Samuel
William
Edward
Joseph

Matthew was on our list; also Jonathan, although he became an Innes.

Jonathan is a lovely grown up name, but has the brilliant short version Johnny when they're wee.

NickNackNooToYou · 05/09/2014 14:33

I have a Matthew he gorgeous I may be biased

I like names such as Matthew, James, Thomas, Daniel, Edward, Samuel, George, William. In fact my other DS is one of these Grin

Tory79 · 05/09/2014 14:34

Jonathan is a good name - its also my brothers name so no go there!

William and Joseph were both on our list for ds1, I've gone off Joseph a bit now I think, but do still like William.

Edward I do like, but along with Henry, (and Thomas which I love) I'm a bit wary of it seeming like we picked our names from Thomas the Tank Engine!

If only we were having a girl! We had our girls name picked for ds1 and its never changed! I find boys names so much harder!

How would Matthew be pronounced where you live? I was put off some names by how they are changed by the way that some people, especially children, around here might say them.

e.g it would be Maffew.

I didn't choose Callum or William here as a big stress is put on the end of the um sound. Will ee Yum. Urgh. Not for me.

You can't really mangle Henry.

Tory79 · 05/09/2014 15:01

Just pronounced as normal 2Kids!

Michael, Alexander, Louis, Peter and all the names above.

Kantha · 05/09/2014 17:50

Do you like Matt as a nn for Matthew? I like Matthew but not Matt which puts me off it as I think it is likely to get shortened at school and in adulthood.

Henry is more of a standalone name and only likely to become Harry or Hal if you call him that yourselves.

What about:
Andrew
Nicholas

Montsti · 05/09/2014 19:26

I like Henry but I find Matthew really boring and I know loads from babies to old men - sorry.

I like:

William
Henry
George
Oliver
Sebastian
Frederick
Benjamin
Alexander
Samuel
Edward
Dominic

Nicholas?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/09/2014 16:57

Scrap both of them and find a compromise.

PamShoo · 08/09/2014 16:53

Don't like Henry as I think of "Horrid Henry"

How about Harry? Daniel? Oliver?

Tory79 · 08/09/2014 21:13

We both did a list of our 5 top names and Thomas was both of ours number 2! Isn't that funny! We discussed it for ds1 but dh didn't want it then, he has clearly changed his mind!

Then we started 'arguing' over middle names, but I've suggested that we let dsd chose (within reason) so that saves us a job there Grin

Lovely name, and goes very well with James Smile

Bicnod · 09/09/2014 14:50

I have an Oscar Matthew and a James Douglas - I think we have similar taste in names!

My current boys list for DC3 (due December) is:

Benjamin
Henry (not helpful to you, I know) or Harry
Thomas
Toby
Jack
Edward
Rory
Harvey

If we hadn't used Douglas as a middle name for DS2 that would also be on the list.

Bicnod · 09/09/2014 14:51

Oh, I also like Samuel.

tryingtocatchthewind · 09/09/2014 16:33

I've got a Matthew and love it, pregnant with number t

tryingtocatchthewind · 09/09/2014 16:34

two and we've sort listed Peter, Sam or Robin if that's of by help

CPtart · 09/09/2014 16:49

Adam
Luke
Marcus
Evan
Dominic
Christopher
Lawrence
Edward
William
Isaac

CPtart · 09/09/2014 16:49

...zachary

melonballer · 10/09/2014 22:54

How about variants? Mathias rather than Matthew for eg? Just a thought

cherrybombxo · 12/09/2014 13:06

I love Henry but only because that's my granddad's name and he shortens it to Harry, and I think Harry is a really sweet name! not counting Harry Styles, because he's a knob

Tory79 · 13/09/2014 09:36

Dsd chose Henry as the middle name......

OP posts:
minipie · 13/09/2014 10:05

Others you both might like:

Ben(jamin)
Mark
Adam
Charlie
Frederick/Freddy
Louis
Leo
David
Robert
