Yes.

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 01/09/2014 20:47

No, I'd pronounce it Ida.

CurlsLDN · 01/09/2014 21:03

I would say i-ee-da, like the musical

CurlsLDN · 01/09/2014 21:04

Sorry, opera

fishfingerSarnies · 01/09/2014 21:17

Thanks guys, the i-ee-da like the opera was what I was worried about hadn't thought of Ida now worried about that.

Shame as I really like Ada but dh doesn't like the look of it and would want to spell it Aida.
Ahh well still have months and months to grind him down.

I know 2 "Aida"s - one is pronounced I-ee-da (elderly American lady), one is Ida (10 year old with mixed European parentage) - neither is Ada.

GiniCooper · 01/09/2014 21:56

Ada.

Beautiful name.

florascotia · 01/09/2014 22:17

I believe it's the Italian version of an Arabic name sometimes spelled Ayda.
Perhaps a Mumsnetter who knows Arabic can kindly help with the proper pronounciation, and even tell us whether the Italian composer Verdi borrowed the Arabic name correctly??

In English (following the 19th cent Italian) it's usually Ah-ee-dah or Aye-ee-dah.
It's spoken here www.forvo.com/languages/it/tag/opera/by-date/

AberdeenAngusina · 01/09/2014 22:50

I'd pronounce it Eye- ee -dah , like the opera.

peanutbutterlove · 02/09/2014 12:23

It's eye-ee-dah like the opera.
