I love the name alex, but is it too similar to my name? Thanks!

I think it's too similar, sorry. Lovely name though.

SavoyCabbage · 31/08/2014 12:11

Not really. They are really similar. More so than Michelle and Michael for example which you might get away with.

Mind you, Nigel and Nigella Lawson pulled it off.

McBear · 31/08/2014 12:11

Depends. What do people call you? For example if they call you Alex no, lexi, possibly

SoonToBeSix · 31/08/2014 12:11

No.

TheXxed · 31/08/2014 12:12

No

MumsyFoxy · 31/08/2014 12:14

No way. Both lovely names but too similar.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 31/08/2014 12:25

I think it's fine.

How many men out there have a father with the exact same name? They cope!

Gemerama82 · 31/08/2014 12:25

Won't it be a bit confusing if you are both called Alex?

babyblabber · 31/08/2014 14:26

loads of people call their kids the same name as one of its parents so can't see what the problem would be

MarmiteChocolate · 31/08/2014 16:52

if you like it, go for it! Alexander can also be shortened to Xander, Al or Lex.

booksandchoc · 31/08/2014 16:54

Go for it, DH is called Daniel and we called Dd Daniella. I think it's lovely x

nbee84 · 31/08/2014 17:20

I know an Alex with an Alexi and an Emma with an Emelia. Never thought either was odd.

onedev · 31/08/2014 17:24

Yes - plenty of children are given the exact name of a parent, so I don't see the issue - do it if you want to!

AnnieLobeseder · 31/08/2014 17:26

My aunt Jackie has a son called Jack. It can be done.

Sophronia · 31/08/2014 22:15

I think it's absolutely fine, it would actually be a nice connection with your own name.

DramaAlpaca · 31/08/2014 23:15

I don't see why not.

My name is similar to DS2's and no-one has ever commented.

tmae · 31/08/2014 23:29

My husband is called Alex and we considered using Alexei for our son but in the end we decided they were too similar (I would have still used it but my husband wasn't too keen I don't think)

mrspuddleduckie · 01/09/2014 21:13

Of course it's fine! I know somebody in the exact same situation, and it's never occurred to me to think it was odd

WaffleWiffle · 01/09/2014 21:15

It's relatively common for fathers and sons to share the same name (or a derivative of).

Yet it seems a stranger thing for a mother and child.

3luckystars · 01/09/2014 21:15

No.

LizardBreath · 01/09/2014 21:23

Please no, I know a male Alex with daughter Alexa. Awful.

ignominious · 01/09/2014 21:37

Yes, you can do what you want. Fine for father to son so why not you.

lexyjay · 02/09/2014 09:59

Thanks for all your replies, no one has ever shortened my name to alex so thought it might be alright. Oh well we have until february to decide!
