Magnus?

I'm currently 19 weeks pregnant and DH and I are at a bit of an impasse regarding potential boy's names! Options are:

Magnus (DH's favourite by far, but I'm not so sure)
Angus (similar but less unusual, but if we were to have a girl in the future then it has the same initial)

  • both of these would be shortened to Gus Also: Campbell Cameron Jamie

A bit of background: we're both Scottish with Polish heritage; he has a 5-letter Polish surname (easy to spell and pronounce, starts with a soft C) and mine is a common English word (starting with a Ch) and I currently double-barrel with his (mine first). We've not fully decided what DC's surname will be (either his or the double-barrelled one). We have a definite girl's name (Alexandra, shortened to Alex) and definite middle names for a girl or a boy (both family names: Patricia and Douglas). Having both first and middle names end with the same sound doesn't bother me hugely, but it would be nice to avoid it.

20 week scan is next week and I'm tempted to find out the sex just to potentially halt the constant light-hearted bickering about names!! What do you guys think about the options? Any other suggestions?

Magnus is a great name! I love it, but I did call my cat that when we got him so can't use it for baby. It's not so unusual people won't know how to say or spell it but still less common. I say go for it!

Sophronia · 17/08/2014 21:10

I like Magnus the best.

Squirm · 17/08/2014 21:34

LOVE Magnus. It was on our shortlist for my baby DS.

Leeds2 · 17/08/2014 21:42

I would choose Cameron or Jamie.

I prefer Marcus to Magnus. Magnus reminds me of Magners.

DoctorLawn · 17/08/2014 21:43

Love love love Magnus.

Aquilla · 17/08/2014 22:01

I love Magnus! If we ever had another DS he would likely be a Magnus.

DramaAlpaca · 17/08/2014 22:27

I really like Magnus and Angus, but tbh I'm not keen on either of them with Douglas as a mn. Maybe you could put another short middle name in between, although that might be too many names if you double barrel your surnames.

From your list I also like Cameron. I like Jamie, but prefer it as a nn for James.

How about Andrew or Jacob?

Twotallladies · 17/08/2014 22:35

The Magnus I know gets "Mag" a lot.

Thanks for the replies!
Douglas is non-negotiable for a middle name, but as the middle name will rarely be verbalised I'm not that bothered with the alliteration.
Andrew is far too common for my tastes (especially where we live), and Jacob is too biblical for us. James with Jamie as a NN is a possibility, though.

My favourite is Campbell from your list. Such a fab name. I do like Magnus but not keen on Gus for nn. All your names I like though!

Magnus is very nice. Simple but unusual. I also like Angus.

What about Dougal, Athol, Ardan, Colm, Fergus, Fintan, Innes, Struan? I also like Seamus/Hamish, but it's a bit less subtly Scottish than the others!
