Love elspeth and martha.

I really like most of them - they're lovely and traditional.

Constance shortened to Connie stands out to me.
And Elspeth.

I especially like Frederick from your list, I think William is very popular just now, so wouldn't use it myself.

Briony
Constance
Elfrida
Are my favourites from your list, with Ada Martha and Elsie being my least favourite.
Alice and Beatrice are lovely but very popular at the moment.

You've got lovely taste! Any of the names on your list would make a great choice. These are the ones I'd personally cross off the list, I've given my reasons below.

Boys
Alfred - Likely to be shortened to Alfie, which is extremely popular

Frederick - I like it but not sure if I like Freddie

Girls
Ada - Will probably constantly be misheard as Ava, although I do like the name

Elfrida - I'm not sure what to make of it to be honest. I kind of like it but I think it's a very brave choice

Elsie - Getting more popular and Elsa will probably rocket up the charts. I'd use Elspeth (which I love!) and have Elsie as a nickname as she'll have more options

Evelyn - Lovely but the Eve/Eva etc. names are everywhere

Grace - Nice but I personally don't like Gracie so would avoid for that reason

Margaret - I just plain don't like it. I think it's very harsh sounding

Martha - Nice but I think there are prettier names on your list

Your best boy's name is Edward. Not too weird, not too popular. Works in lots of languages/countries. Lots of nn possibilities and works at any age. Our Edward is only 2yo, so he is a Teddy at the moment, or sometimes a Bear, but when he gets older he can be Ted, Ned or Ed, with Edward for formal use.

From your girl's list, my favourites are Elspeth, Esme, Margaret and Martha.

I love the name Elspeth!!! Not big fan of your boys names but Alfred sounds the best to me

crazycatwoman · 07/08/2014 07:22

Thanks all, I think we are narrowing it down!

Your girl names are nice but I'm not keen on the grandad names you've picked.

James or William

Alice or Beatrice

Alfred is too old mannish for me. Martha always makes me think of a dumpy girl with a middle part and thick glasses.
