Will my mum's choices pass the mumsnet test?!

Due next month and asked my mum's opinion on baby names. Her choices are so un-mumsnet!!

Christian with a K
Catherine but only with a K
Crystal with a K!
Jacinta

She then proceeded to tell me she wanted to call my sister Diamond!!

I don't mind the name Celeste, however, I am currently expecting dc3, so you would think she would have got the message! I did briefly consider as I middle name if baby is a girl but then decided no. Grin

At one stage (1970/80s?) it was popular for people living in the UK of Indian heritage to give their DCs 'Western' names because it was thought it would give them fairer chances at employment etc.

Is explained in one of the cookbooks by Vicky Bhogal - she has a sister and a brother that are similarly named.

I also know someone of Indian origin, whose first name is Steve and last name is an Indian name.

Jacinta also means 'hyacinth' in Italian ( but spelt Giacinta). It's quite a nice name.

mathanxiety · 17/07/2014 06:35

I know several Jacintas (Irish) and none of them are Jackie. It's a soft C. Nice name imo. And it doesn't get shortened.

Kristian and Katherine are nice (imo). Kristian looks Northern European.

Kristal and Diamond Hmm

Delphiniumsblue · 17/07/2014 06:39

Katherine is lovely but you can't inflict the others!

Trondheim · 17/07/2014 06:42

Krystal is better off spelt Krystle for uniqueness.

I know adult and baby Crystals (London).

Surely is a good thing if a name doesn't pass the mumsnet test? To me is an indicator that you have a name that is out of the top 100. All good.

nooka · 17/07/2014 07:44

Katherine is pretty mainstream surely? The 'K' theme is quite funny. I quite like Jacinta and I'm really not understanding why people have suggested it would become Jackie, as it has no 'Jack" sound in it.

Crystal (even with a 'K') makes me think of Dynasty, big hair and shoulder pads, very 80s!

rachel234 · 17/07/2014 07:49

Why is Kathryn ok but Krystal not, I wonder? Both are different spellings of the original names Catherine and Crystal.

CheerfulYank · 17/07/2014 07:51

My mom was insistent on Sophie for a girl and Hadyn for a boy. Confused

Eastpoint · 17/07/2014 07:56

What about Kristin, slightly Nordic which is even more fun if your dd is of Indian heritage. I have lots of American friends in their late 40s with K names, Kirstin, Kristine, Kathryn, Katherime, Kirstin & Kimberley.

Iownafourinchporsche · 18/07/2014 20:08

I actually like Kathleen though

mumatron · 18/07/2014 20:12

Well my mum really wanted me to call dd2 Suki. No idea why! She had heard it being called in a park somewhere and loved it.

scottishmummy · 18/07/2014 20:25

Is your mum a kardashian
Is she find of fake tan and leopard skin
Does she sing country music when merry
The names are a bit trailer park

scottishmummy · 18/07/2014 20:26

Katherine is ok.others are trailer park

looki · 18/07/2014 20:31

Katherine is ok, I prefer it spelled with a C but if using the nickname Kate, it is probably easier to use a K.

I really dislike the name Jacinta. To me it's one of those names my sisters and I would use to tease each other eg Hello Jacinta - Hello Patricia (substitute any name you don't like).

I adore Celeste and still have some name regret for not using it.

The others are pretty awful.

50shadesofknackered · 19/07/2014 20:49

I used to know an old lady called Diamond and her twin sister was called Pearl.

ShadowFall · 19/07/2014 20:59

I love Katherine. One of our shortlisted names for both DS1 and DS2. Sadly we couldn't use it (although I suppose it would have been a pretty unique choice)

Not so keen on the rest of the names though.
