Can we give baby same name as cat?

We don't know gender yet so this may be a moot point but the only girls name we both like is what we called or cat (she is 6 and we've had her since she was 9 weeks old, so she is a proper part of the family)

Part of me thinks "well if it was good enough for Indiana Jones" but another part of me thinks it's silly.

Everyone that knows us semi well - family, friends, even some of my work colleagues - will know baby and cat have same name.

What to do?

It's a lovely name and if it's what you like then do it. When she arrives she may look like a Jessica but that's ok too. If you think other people will think its weird just start calling your cat bambi. Cat won't distinguish the difference and people won't think you are odd

SillyTillyTilly · 17/07/2014 09:58

Indiana works for a girl too Grin Shortens to Indie or Ana

Steelojames · 17/07/2014 10:07

I have cat who is very much apart of the family also.
If you like the name why not??

No offence but it's not like the cat will be around forever.....

My cat was my absolute baby before I had my DS & it changes slightly once your child will be born.

SillyTillyTilly · 17/07/2014 10:22

Does nobody else feel shocked at the 'your cat will be dead soon anyway,' 'it's not like the cat will be around forever' comments? Grin And my childhood cat lived for almost 19 years!

Our pets (dogs) aren't substitute children, but they're not objects, or disposable, they're much loved family members.

I really don't see the problem with calling the baby Amber.
The cat probably won't mind anyway.

ClareBaldingsHair · 17/07/2014 11:17

We did it, it was absolutely fine (although it was an adopted cat so we didn't name him originally). The worst thing was a few jokes from family members in the first few weeks.

We thought the cat would die imminently but it is still going strong 7 years on!! It has honestly not caused any problems - I would go for it

darksideofthemooncup · 17/07/2014 11:17

My cat is called Dave, my neighbour is also called Dave, as is my brother. When we all get together it's like a particularly rubbish sit-com in our house.

IvyBeagle · 17/07/2014 11:36

Cat could become Amilie. Do you like Ember as well?

ProfessorDent · 17/07/2014 12:10

Am I the only one who imagines a future phone call of a tragic nature to relatives, where misunderstandings arise because someone thinks it's only that cat that's been taken seriously ill...

weebairn · 17/07/2014 13:22

I really want to do this too. My cat's name is Richard Hawley, after the singer.

And after reading too much about War of the Roses this last year, I REALLY like the name Richard…

I am so torn as to whether this is an acceptable thing to do! Boyfriend is all for it and says it will be fine as they will have different surnames. And we mostly call the cat Hawley or Hawlster…

Mammanat222 · 17/07/2014 13:22

Yep my childhood cat lived until 19 too..

That was the reason I mentioned cat's age, she is still relatively young and we hope she'll be around for some time yet.

I actually quite like Ember, very pretty. Very similar though.

My brother also called his daughter after our childhood cat, who had a normal girl's name. This cat is now dead. But I gave him a lot of teasing about it. Which I now regret due to the possible richard situation...

Portlypenguin · 17/07/2014 13:27

If you want amber, go for it. Back in the day ( and in some other cultures) basically everyone has the same name.

weebairn · 17/07/2014 13:28

In the War of the Roses, EVERYONE is called Richard, Edward, Margaret, Elizabeth or Henry :)

fledermaus · 17/07/2014 13:30

I'd rename the cat Bambi

Name the baby Amber

Sorted.

I new a girl who was named the same as the family dog - they were both called Shelly.

LikeTheShoes · 17/07/2014 13:46

Won't you want to shorten baby-Amber to Ambi too?

shouldn't your cat have three diferent names anyway?

SillyTillyTilly · 17/07/2014 13:57

"Back in the day ( and in some other cultures) basically everyone has the same name."

"In the War of the Roses, EVERYONE is called Richard, Edward, Margaret, Elizabeth or Henry"

But not much danger of the pets having the same names as humans! Grin Most popular cats' names would likely be some form of 'Tibb' or similar. Or something descriptive.

weebairn · 17/07/2014 14:00

:) SillyTillyTilly

Damn that cat. Ruining my plans. Of course I should really save the name Richard for the third child (this will be DC2) so we could call him Richard III...

Yes I would Grin

milliejfrancis · 17/07/2014 14:02

I don't think it matters. What if you adopted the cat after your baby was born and it had the same name?! I know a lot of people call their pets my name and it wouldn't put me off adopting it Smile

doubleshotespresso · 17/07/2014 14:47

Is this a joke?

educatingarti · 17/07/2014 14:55

Yes but you could only call your third ds Richard III if the first two were Richard I and Richard II! Burial under a car park in Leicester is optional!

SillyTillyTilly · 17/07/2014 15:02

Or she could get one more cat to also call Richard. Though I'm not sure what human RIII would make of it on discovery Grin

wherethewildthingis · 17/07/2014 15:03

My dog is called a name which was definitely not a human name when she was born, ten years ago, but is now.about the most popular name for a girl in the UK. My best friend chose this name for her little girl.
It is an utter nightmare. Child, in high chair, eating. Dog, below, begging. Me, saying firmly "no, dog's name, go to your bed". Child crying. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.
