Can we give baby same name as cat?

We don't know gender yet so this may be a moot point but the only girls name we both like is what we called or cat (she is 6 and we've had her since she was 9 weeks old, so she is a proper part of the family)

Part of me thinks "well if it was good enough for Indiana Jones" but another part of me thinks it's silly.

Everyone that knows us semi well - family, friends, even some of my work colleagues - will know baby and cat have same name.

What to do?

We specifically gave our cat a name that we knew we would not use for a child - think something along the lines of Esmeralda - and did not 'use up' our best name so it was free for child use. However, if you are already in the situation then just do it - and change the name of the cat. Our cat was 'second hand' and we never actually knew what name she had been given in the first place - they really don't care!

Sorry Rhubarb, so you did.

Do it.
My short list had old family dog (boy name) and rabbit (girl name). Oh and close family friends dog (boy name).

If you love the name it's more important to give it to your child. Sadly your cat will probably be dead by the time your child is 8 or 9. Then no one will even know after that.

If you are really worried I assume you have a nn for cat. Just only use that for cat once child is born.

Let us know what you decide.

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 16/07/2014 19:04

It'll be fine.

It could be worse - Imagine if you were determined that you were going to name your baby after the cat and it was called Fluffypaws... You're lucky that the cat is called Amber.

Catsmamma · 16/07/2014 19:11

Our first do was called Lily and I really grew to love it, but dh vetoed giving it to dd and changing the dog's name.

also small side note some years back at work a woman came in to make an appointment for her son, she patronisingly spelt out every word she thought I might have trouble with, even though I was obviously writng it down correctly...she felt the need to emphasise several parts.

that's e-y at the end, street...s-t-r-e-e-t

Continuing also letter by letter for the town area she lived in. As she said her son's name I looked right at her and said....really I can manage that. It is my cat's name.

coffeeinbed · 16/07/2014 19:13

My dog has the same name as a close friend's and a cousin's sons.

It's a bit awkward.
But the dog was here first!

ColdCottage · 16/07/2014 19:57

The name I had loved since I was a teenager was discussed but not a real contender as it is my Fil's name as well as a number of close friends name and as I mentioned before, old family dogs name.
Still might use it if we have another DS, just can't quite let it go....

ColdCottage · 16/07/2014 20:04

Channel 5 - now. Angry Brits caught on camera. Might give us a few examples I feel!

ColdCottage · 16/07/2014 20:04

Oops cross post, sorry!

lola88 · 16/07/2014 20:38

It's like naming your 2 children the same thing the dogs name is the dogs name they baby deserves her own new shiny name something all of her own.

EBearhug · 16/07/2014 20:41

If your cat has a human name, then why not?

My mother also used to call us by each other's names and the cats' names, going through till she got to the right one.

Our cats did not have names that humans tend to be called.

YoHoHoandabottleofWine · 16/07/2014 21:38

My Dbro's cat has the same name as his girlfriend (cat was there first). We call them 'Tilly'-girl and 'Tilly'-cat.

It does cause no end of confusion/ mock confusion though (Dbro is just worming Tilly (which one??), Tilly is lying on my bed, Tilly has been fighting in the garden) etc etc

Just change the cat's name.

coffeeslave · 16/07/2014 22:01

My older sister is named after a cat my parents had at the time, Suzanne after Suzie the cat. She's now 42 and I think unharmed... We've always been a 'cat family' so it was kinda cute :-)

GoggleFox · 16/07/2014 22:18

I agree with this. Try to tease out what you love about the name - is it because it's warm (the colour Amber), precious (the stone), enigmatic (not red, not green) and then set yourself the challenge of finding a new name with those qualities for your baby!

duchesse · 16/07/2014 22:23

As long as you're not planning on calling the baby Tiddles, Puss or Furcifer I can't see what hte problem is. Most pets have human names these days, not the other way round. Felix for example is a boy's name, not a cat name. I could call my cat Henry although his real name is Leonard, but that doesn't make it "a cat's name", merely the name of my cat.

Laymizzrarb · 17/07/2014 00:20

My cat is called Sharon. The last pair were Shirley and Susan. The goldfish are Brenda and Malcolm. My friend has a cat called Dave.

If you have a DS you can call him Bamber!

Angelina7 · 17/07/2014 00:20

Well Amber is currently a popular girls name so I don't think friends will even remember once they meet baby Amber :-) if when your baby is born she's a girl and you look at her and think Amber fits her go for it, but yes in the mean time getting used to your cat as Bambi is a great idea to help with the possible transition, even if you have a boy ... Change cats name now for possible future use!! In years to come it will be an enjoyable story i wouldn't Mind if I had a name of a previous pet! ... People have been named after much worse lol x

Carnival · 17/07/2014 00:46

Can I suggest Tambourine as your cat's new name, which you could shorten to Tambi, so it sounds like it's current name?

Amber is a good name. I used to know a little girl called Amber Elizabeth, which I thought was cute.

merrymouse · 17/07/2014 06:08

I don't think it matters.

It is very easy to call an animal by a nickname which becomes it's new name.

Cats are attractive animals. (OK some people aren't that keen on cats, but at least they aren't as controversial as tarantulas).

It isn't as though you are calling her Tiddles or Socks.

I don't think many people ask why you have a particular first name, and if they do "My parents just really liked it - in fact they used to have a cat with the same name!" is more of an icebreaker than anything else.

As your life progresses I think the number of people who will remember/know what your daughter's parent's cat was called before she was born is pretty small.

merrymouse · 17/07/2014 06:14

As her life progresses

DogCalledRudis · 17/07/2014 06:59

What is the cat's name?
Ours is Tiggy. Visiting cat is Essy
Wouldn't call a baby these names.

FamiliesShareGerms · 17/07/2014 07:09

No, there are plenty of lovely names out there rather than duplicating them.

rachel234 · 17/07/2014 07:51

Names are give to people and things so they can be identified.

Please give your child and your pet their own names - there are thousands to choose from!

Mammanat222 · 17/07/2014 08:46

We struggled to name the bloody cat to begin with (I wanted to call her Yoda, OH wanted HER to be called "Dave the Cat" - not Dave but "Dave the Cat" !!)

We never agreed on a girls name when I was pregnant last time - team yellow but had a boy and we had a boy's name set in stone.

Anyhoo, got a few weeks until the 20 week scan si I'll revisit it then.

I must say Indiana has grown on me for a boy - little baby Indie - awwww!
