Catherine/Katherine/Kathryn

I'm usually very anti incorrect spelling of names however I also have an illogical dislike for the spelling Catherine, it feels a bit sickly sweet and meh.
I also know a lot of mners have a huge dislike for K names and am seeking advice as to whether Katherine/ryn is simply wrong?
Seeing all 3 variations here on my screen I can't help liking Kathryn the most which goes against all my instincts.

I don't know yet whether I'm having a boy or a girl but struggle with girls names, I like traditional names that stand the test of time.

I think it's one of those names with several legitimate spellings, all three you suggested are widely used so it's fine to pick your favourite spelling.

If you went for kathurin or cathuryne I'd be saying otherwise...

ashtrayheart · 06/07/2014 21:04

I'm a Catherine who always wanted to be Katharine !

stripedtortoise · 06/07/2014 21:31

100% Katherine or Kathryn. Never with a C! Hmm, I'm not sure I like any names that begin with a C.....

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 06/07/2014 21:33

Katherine doesn't come under the K name prejudice as it's old and traditional. I'm Katherine and I prefer it to the other spellings obv, but I don't have it shortened by anyone, ever. Nobody shortens it more than once because I correct them. Plenty of people ask if I go by a shortening and I just say no, so they call me Katherine.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 06/07/2014 22:08

Depends on how you want it shortened:-

Katie is short for Katherine
Katy is short for Kathryn
Cat is short for Catherine

I would avoid Katharine / Catharine as they are less common spelling.

BellMcEnd · 06/07/2014 22:11

I prefer Katharine or Katherine to the other spellings. Never been keen on Kathryn or Catherine

StampyIsMyBoyfriend · 06/07/2014 22:13

With a K, because as above I like Kate as a pet form

BlueStarsAtNight · 06/07/2014 23:02

I definitely prefer the K versions, and I think Kathryn has the edge for me. I agree with pp's they are all legitimate spellings. I don't like Catherine it doesn't look anything like as pretty. Also like Kate/Katy as nn.

FatherSpodoKomodo · 06/07/2014 23:18

Kathryn for me. It was on my list, and that was the spelling I would have chosen.

I'm a Katherine. So this is obviously the correct spelling Grin

I will answer to Kat, Kath and Kate (although I hate Kathy).

As others have said, whichever spelling you choose your DD will have to spell it out forever. Most people simply default to the most common spelling in their experience.

DrewsWife · 07/07/2014 00:37

I have a Katherine. I love her name. No one mis spells it she is known as Katie

BeatriceBean · 07/07/2014 00:41

I think Catherin is much prettier.

I really really don't like the Kathryn spelling, only come across it in recent years!

fourforksache · 07/07/2014 00:42

all lovely but I prefer Catherine.

RainbowB7 · 07/07/2014 00:45

Catherine

ThatLightbulbMoment · 07/07/2014 00:50

katienne??

ShadowFall · 07/07/2014 00:51

I prefer Katherine, then Catherine, then Kathryn.

florascotia · 07/07/2014 10:52

Interesting info on the spelling, the dozens (literally) of different worldwide versions, and the evolution of the name, here: www.behindthename.com/name/katherine

jeee · 07/07/2014 10:57

I am a version of this - as a child I thought 'kicking' K was far superior to the rather lame 'curly' C. My favourite spelling was actually 'Katharine' - I don't know why, but I just liked the 'a' in the middle of the name.

However, my parents obviously had different views, and my name wasn't spelt the way I would have chosen.

bouquetofpencils · 07/07/2014 11:55

So many variants

Katrina
Catrin
Catriona
Caitlin
Kathleen
Kitty
Kate

You are spoilt for choice really so just take your pick. I prefer Kathleen to Kathryn but it's a very personal thing.

50KnockingonabiT · 07/07/2014 11:59

we have a Katherine, mainly known as Kate/Katie

Nereida · 07/07/2014 14:05

Katharine is my favourite.

Dogsmom · 07/07/2014 19:02

Thanks for all the replies, Katherine seems the most popular, I do like the double A spelling but don't want to lumber her with a lifetime of spelling it, she could just say "Katherine with a K".

Must admit I'm not keen on Katie as a nn though and I'm assuming it will be shortened.

This is one of those threads where every answer you receive will be different! There are so many variations and no rules for shortenings (Kate M is Catherine!) so just go with what you prefer. Also, as someone mentioned on a previous Katherine thread, Katherine/Catherine/Kathryn's etc will always have to spell their names to people however you spell it so don't worry too much about that!! It is a lovely classic name in my ( biased) opinion!

AmeliaToppingLovesShopping · 12/07/2014 09:36

My name is Katherine and I always have to spell it out so if you prefer Katharine don't let that bother you.
