We are struggling to think of even one name we both like. Both fairly fussy.

Criteria:

2 syllables ideally, but no more than 3.
Can't end with an M or an S
Preferably doesn't start with B, R, L
No nature names

To fit with our separate preferences, it can't be too unusual but neither can it be too strongly traditional.

Definitely not:
Henry, Arlo, Frederick, John, Ian, William, Neo, Scott, Leo

Names that one of us quite likes and the other is a bit 'meh, maybe' about:
Kester
Owen
Zeno
Ruan/Rewan
Elwyn
Quinlan
Jared
Cooper
Eisley
Gibson
Cameron
Ivan
Lennox/Lenox
Ned
Sydney/Sidney
Kitto
Lowen

If you have any suggestions please help! At the moment neither of us has anything we LOVE.

If your DH likes Owen what about Evan, Euan, Eoin etc?

Seems like one or both of you like names with the "un" sound at the end (Ivan, Cameron, Owen etc) so how about:

Jason
Lachlan
Morgan
Jordan
London
Simon
Justin
Nathan
Struan

A lot of traditional names are actually very uncommon these days. I'm yet to meet a baby Philip or Richard for example. Not many called Peter, John, Andrew or Mark either. I think those names would be seen as unusual amongst the child's peers but would still pass your DH's easy-to-spell-and-not-try-hard test.

fanjodisfunction · 01/07/2014 22:54

Evan
Aiden
duncan
gordon
Kieron
Marcus
Fletcher

cant think of ones that are uncommon but common and easy to spell, lol.

Love your suggestion of kester, this is top of my list for ds2. Also love quinn. I also like reed, boyd and broden. My ds is called lachlan.

looki · 01/07/2014 23:00

Cian is pronounced Key In if that helps.

Workinglate · 01/07/2014 23:06

I like Laszlo/Lazlo too.

Cairo, you're right about the 'un' sound, hadn't realised that.

Evan and Euan/Ewan are out because of friends/family connections.

The thing is that the John, Andrew, Philip type names sound so dull to me because I grew up with those names - I don't mean that I'm not prepared to go with something more traditional, but I don't want something that I don't actually take any pleasure in at all, even if it is unusual.

I just can't seem to find anything that we both feel belongs with us.

I think Cian is a name no one round here would be sure how to pronounce.

I felt the same when we were pg, I went on and on about one name dh wasnt keen. The when I paired it up with second names that went with the name suddenly dh was on board. Your get there, but your entitled to be annoyed thats your not there yet.

would picking a name around a theme help, like a cou try your from or have connections to, or a family name from a few generations ago.

My rules were; two syllables, pref not in the top 200, been in use as a first name for at least 100 years, couldn't start with A or M, had to have a nickname derivative, but had to be a 'full' name and I couldn't know any.

We got Byron

Didn't love at first but it was the only name we both 'liked' I love it now and call him Ronnie (hubby's suggested name) more often than planned. It was settled in labour!

Both write lists and swap and veto til you have another short list?

AnsonsVoyageRoundTheWorld · 02/07/2014 00:08

Byron is a really cool name Smile

Have you thought of;

Gabriel
Joshua (may be too popular for your tastes, but no so many little ones about now)
Callum (as above - but also ends in an m)

I think Lucas fits well with the traditional but also modern criteria - but as it starts with an L and ends with an S, would it be a no go?

Please do let us know what you decide - I'm intrigued to know which name fits the bill Grin.
