When pregnant with DS who is now 2, our girl name was Elsa. Now pregnant again I still love the name Elsa, but... Has Disney ruined it the name?

It's climbing up in popularity from virtually unheard of (two years ago) to number 88. Will the name now be forever associated with Frozen?

I think Ariel Sharon, personally.

Aliceinvodkaland · 28/06/2014 21:56

i think you are in a minority of one there alis!!! Grin

roastpots · 28/06/2014 21:59

I met a lovely Elske the other day

Alisvolatpropiis · 28/06/2014 22:01

I accept that Grin

Ariel is a Hebrew name in my defence. I am a flat out name nerd, I find origin, usage and perception very interesting.

Ariel isn't even pronounced properly in the Disney film. It isn't Arri-elle, it's R-E-L as in, how one would pronounce each letter from the alphabet (in English anyway). And it's a male name outside of Disney. Or rather, was.

Smartiepants79 · 28/06/2014 22:07

If you love it who cares?
For my second daughter I chose an extremely popular name (top ten) without even realising. Because I didn't bother to look at the lists.

gamescompendium · 28/06/2014 22:08

Elsa is a girl I was at school with. it's a lovely name, the kids will all think it's a great name. I'm not sure how much it will increase in popularity because of the film, but it might have been on the up anyway, Freya has climbed very high from nowhere and Elsa has a similar feel to it.

Castlelough · 29/06/2014 05:31

Elsa is lovely. Alternatively you could have Elva?

burgatroyd · 29/06/2014 08:29

Alisavola, I too am a name nerd and now I'm interested in what you called your dcs.

Back to the topic, Elsa and Eric will probably top the charts.

Do you REALLY love it that much or more so now as its slightly taboo.

I really love Maya but didn't go for it as its very popular and I prefer the (wrong) prn May ah. I go it over it. What other names do you like?

clouberrieswait · 29/06/2014 11:37

I think it may be hugely popular and may even be dated in a decade or so Sad

Elodie, Elvira

burg

No dc's yet but hopefully soon! Smile

MissYamabuki · 30/06/2014 07:41

But Elsa = also the character in Lohengrin, the opera... just another association.
And Ariel is very popular in Argentina and Israel (more of a boy's name though I think?), it must mean something nice in Hebrew Smile
Different people, different associations...

burgatroyd · 30/06/2014 08:25

Good luck to you, alisvolo!!!

I have an Elsa named before the film came out. Little children do comment and very occasionally their parents but always in a positive way. All the little girls think it is very cool that she has the same name as the film and want to play with her. I haven't met any others in the last 2 years. People are always very complimentary about her name. If you love it I'd use it.

Falconwolf101 · 01/09/2014 17:26

No. Frozen is amazing. My name is Elsa, so I should know. It feels great seeing your once unknown name be everywhere!

I hate Frozen
Lunastarfish · 01/09/2014 18:27

The first time I heard Elsa was from Indiana Jones.Despite being a Nazi who shagged son & father I earmarked it as a name. However, yes, Frozen has massively put me off!

HollyBen · 01/09/2014 18:40

DD is obsessed with Frozen. I like the name Elsa. I would be tempted to go with Ailsa for DC2 but it is very similar to DDs name

Letitgoletitgo · 01/09/2014 19:57

My dd is Elsa, born 2011 long before Frozen appeared. I love her name, but am a bit disappointed as one of the reasons for my choice was that it was unusual as well as beautiful. She however loves that name as a 2.5 year old, other children ask if it's really her name and are jealous of it!

PandaWatch · 02/09/2014 11:52

OP I think if you love the name, in respect of your concern about the Disney connection, you just need to....

...wait for it...

...LET IT GO!

PandaWatch · 02/09/2014 11:53

MissYamabuki Ariel was one of the archangels. It means "Lion of God"

CruCru · 02/09/2014 17:17

Would you consider Ilsa?

306235388 · 02/09/2014 17:23

I would use Elsa now , definitely not. Elsie was my top name with dd.
