Jonah

Jonah is one of my favourite names but I've read that it means bad luck. I'm quite superstitious, even though I try not to be. I don't feel like I can use the name just in case he has bad luck in his life. This is ridiculous I know, anyone care to talk some sense into me?

I know a couple of Jonah's. I like it :-) although it took ages to persuade DS age 3 that he didn't have a friend called Tuna...

I love it - I wouldn't even give a moments notice to the bad luck thing. You cannot attribute whatever happens in your childs life to their name!

Fcukfifa · 22/06/2014 16:56

Id day go for it if you like it! I'm not into the meaning of names, don't understand how it means anything

My youngest is called Yonah, so very similar-I don't have a clue what it means though Grin

Ffs! *say! Why is there no edit button on here!

flagnogbagnog · 22/06/2014 16:59

I love it

NoArmaniNoPunani · 22/06/2014 17:03

I've not heard someone use Jonah as another word for jinx for a long time. I think it's a great name

squoosh · 22/06/2014 17:09

It's nice.

Best if he never joins the navy, becomes a fisherman or yachtsman though.

schmee · 22/06/2014 17:32

I rejected it because of the connotations although it has a lovely sound.

SpiffingGalore · 22/06/2014 17:32

It's ds2's name, so needless to say I love it Smile

Apparently it's only bad luck at sea.

Nereida · 22/06/2014 19:45

I prefer Jonas.

RabbitSaysWoof · 22/06/2014 20:47

Jonah means peace.
I love it btw.

SomeSunnySunday · 22/06/2014 20:54

We rejected it because of the "bad luck" issue, but really only because FIL is ex-navy and the sort of person who would have said something about it. Lovely name, and if it hadn't been for this it would have been a front runner for DS2.

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 23/06/2014 12:10

Another one suggesting Jonas. Like that a lot more.

florascotia · 23/06/2014 19:25

In the original Hebrew, it most certainly does not mean bad luck. As earlier poster has said, it means 'dove' = 'peace'.

Historically, supersitions were ways of helping poor and powerless people to explain and cope with things out of their control. They limited rational thought. Thankfully, today we don't have to be bound by them.
