Arguing over Elsie-May!!!! How important that middle name flows?

Have settled on the name Lucy for our new baby!

I'm keen on having Lucy Ellen (Ellen is my nans name)

But DP is insisting on Lucy Elsie May, I just can't get my head around this as to me it doesn't flow!

I offered a compromise on Lucy Ellen May (so both family names are included but he isn't having it!

To be honest I really dislike May and so desperately want Lucy Ellen!

What do you all think? Any alternatives you can come up with?

Im with you Lucy elsie may is awful. Lucy ellen may much better. Lucy ellen is lovely.

MaloryArcher · 21/06/2014 20:43

Lucy Ellen is gorgeous.

Lucy Elsie May doesn't flow at all and makes the name much less nice and much more tacky sounding.

Conclusion: You have much better taste than your DH and you'll be doing the birthing so you get final say Grin .

Jumblebee · 21/06/2014 20:44

Lucy Ellan is lovely!

Lucy Elsie-may is a bit twee for my tastes though Hmm

Smartiepants79 · 21/06/2014 20:46

Seems like an awful fuss over a middle name.
Why is your DP so attached to Elsie may?
Personally if May and Ellen are both family names then Lucy Ellen May is perfect. How often (if ever) are you going to actually call her by all her names?
Elsie may does flow but the Elsie is unnecessary if Ellen is important to you. Your DP is being a bit of a Dick.
In my experience I'd wait until just after you've given birth. At that point your DP will promise you anything!
That's how I got my first choice for names for my DD!

BlueStarsAtNight · 21/06/2014 20:52

Agree with everyone else. Lucy Ellen is gorgeous and Lucy Elsie May sounds awful. I think flow is really important, even in middle names.

Lucy Ellen May sounds like a good compromise, hopefully your DH will come round to your way of thinking!

SueDNim · 21/06/2014 20:56

When we named our DD I worked out that you should only only have 1 name ending in an 'ie' sound. E.g. "Katie Amy" wouldn't work because they both end with the same sound. Similarly only one name ending with 'a'.

So Lucy Elsie May doesn't work because Lucy and Elsie end with the same sound. I think that the "y" on Lucy and May sound a bit different, so they are ok together (ish). But Lucy Ellen is by far the best of all of your options.

Guin1 · 22/06/2014 02:57

Agree - Lucy Ellen flows so much better! Although I actually prefer the name Elsie to Ellen, putting Lucy Elsie together with the repeated "see" sound at the end of both names doesn't work. You are compromising on the May bit, your DP should compromise on the Elsie.

nooka · 22/06/2014 03:15

Lucy and Elsie are much too similar to use in the same name (and to me Elsie is a nickname so looks a bit odd in the middle). May isn't such a problem - Lucy May would be OK, Lucy Ellen is much better, and Lucy Ellen May is fine too. However you need to come to agreement with your DP, so I'd suggest thinking about some different middle names you both like rather than arguing over names that one of you loves and the other dislikes.

So any other family names that you might like? I quite like a longer name in the middle with a short first name - Lucy Elizabeth, Lucy Margaret, Lucy Alice, Lucy Frances.

ScrambledEggAndToast · 22/06/2014 06:41

Surely you wouldn't always be calling her Lucy-Elsie, judging by the lack of a hyphen. I agree it doesn't flow as well as Lucy Ellen but I wouldn't worry too much. If it's that important to your husband then let him have his choice, Elsie is a really pretty name. Plus, no one really cares about middle names anyway.

Mumof3xox · 22/06/2014 06:42

I know a Lucy Ellen. She is lovely

Lucy Elsie May is just silly

ScrambledEggAndToast · 22/06/2014 06:42

Just to add, Lucy is a fab choice. DS would have been called Lucy (with Caitlin for a middle name) had he been a girl.

nooka · 22/06/2014 06:54

I think that in this case both the OP and her DP care quite a lot about the middle name(s)!

Delphiniumsblue · 22/06/2014 07:07

Lucy Ellen is lovely.
I hate the name Elsie. Elsie May sounds even worse!
If you have to compromise I would have Lucy May.

MsCoconut · 22/06/2014 09:41

I agree with Guin1 about not liking the double "see" sound in Lucy Elsie. Lucy Ellen flows much better.

Some compromise combo using variants of Ellen/Elsie:

Lucy Elisabeth (May)
Lucy Elsa May
Lucy Eleanor (May)
Lucy Helena (May)

BreeVDKamp · 22/06/2014 11:19

I know a Lucy Ellen so sounds right to me!

Lucy Elsie May - Lucy & Elsie end in the same sound so it sounds odd to me.

Nereida · 22/06/2014 13:53

Lucy Ellen is so much better than Lucy Elsie May.

Catsmamma · 22/06/2014 13:55

I think May is a hopeless middle name, it just takes the place of a verb and everyone is wondering exactly what Elsie may do.

LarrytheCucumber · 22/06/2014 20:00

My aunt was Muriel Elsie May. She would be 98 if still alive.

Alita7 · 22/06/2014 20:19

if Ellen is important to you and may to him then Lucy Ellen May makes sense and he should be happy!

Why does he want Elsie in there too?

JohnFarleysRuskin · 22/06/2014 20:25

I thought middle names were just a messing around thing. I am constantly amazed at the level of importance people put on something no one will know after the first week.

Who has this name got to flow to? Lucy (Elsie May or Ellen) is perfectly nice.

Delphiniumsblue · 22/06/2014 22:46

Why have one at all if it is just 'messing around'. Confused

ch1134 · 22/06/2014 23:03

Please please call her

ch1134 · 22/06/2014 23:05

Lucy Ellen May. This was my nana's full name (surname May). I love the name Lucy but have called my son a name which now means I can never use it.

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 23/06/2014 00:59

Lucy Elsie May is TERRIBLE.

You can't have Lucy and Elsie.

It would be like having Timmy and Jimmy

Or Polly Molly.

You only just get away with Lucy Ellen!

lettertoherms · 23/06/2014 01:02

In agreement with everyone - Lucy Ellen is great, Lucy Ellen May still lovely, Lucy Elsie May is so clunky, no no no.
