For a girl, what do you think?

Irena is better

2kidsintow · 11/06/2014 21:00

Mmmm.... no. I don't like it, sorry.

Would it be Er en a, or Er een a?

fakenamefornow · 11/06/2014 21:00

Irena sounds a bit dated though. I suppose you would pronounce Erena, Arena, like stadium?

AnnabelleDarling · 11/06/2014 21:02

Irina is nicer I think

LovelyMarchHare · 11/06/2014 21:06

It doesn't look very appealing written down IYSWIM. But if you love it, go for it. I think something nicer might be out there tho.

fakenamefornow · 11/06/2014 21:06

How would you pronounce that?

OP posts:
fakenamefornow · 11/06/2014 21:06

It doesn't sound too popular with the mn jury.

I prefer Serena.

Erena looks like you lost a letter.

fakenamefornow · 11/06/2014 21:12

I used to know a Serena though, drag queen, she was lovely but it reminds me too much of her.

I know an Erina (pronounced like arena). I can't say that it's a particular favourite name of mine but it does sound quite sweet.

PolyesterBride · 11/06/2014 22:16

Sounds a bit like a form of contraception

PolyesterBride · 11/06/2014 22:19

Erina is a Japanese name, pronounced a bit like eh-ree-na with equal stress on all syllables

isitsnowingyet · 11/06/2014 22:21

How about Erin?

Erena sounds like Arena, but spelt wrong! [sorry]

Nereida · 11/06/2014 22:48

Too much like arena. I also prefer Irina or Irena.

Alita7 · 11/06/2014 22:57

I think it's Ok with an E (even if it's the wrong spelling it just looks like an uncommon name to me!) but don't like Irena. I like Erin, Seren and Serena though

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 11/06/2014 23:03

Well, not only sounds made up but also terminally boring!

It's a collection of dull sounds. Could be a contraceptive pill. Or an unsuccessful racehorse. There's just nothing to it.

Odd, because Serena is nice!

How about Serena or even better Sabrina?

BumpNGrind · 11/06/2014 23:26

Say what you feel Bruno Grin

florascotia · 12/06/2014 12:47

Wasn't there a long thread a little while ago about Irene/Eirene/Irina/Irena? All different spellings of essentially the same name.

Really don't wish to sound critical, but if Erena is a new variation on that very old (Ancient Greek) name, to my mind it doesn't really work. Because in English, 'Er' at the beginning of a word sounds either like 'ehr' (as in error) or 'uhr' (as in ermine). To me, neither are very pretty. And, as others have said, there's a danger of people hearing it as 'arena', and why would anyone call a baby that?

fakenamefornow · 13/06/2014 22:38

Oh dear! Not a single person likes my name Sad oh well, best I don't burden a child with it then.

For information, it would be pronounced 'arena'. I though it was nice, cool even.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 14/06/2014 10:53

Irina is cool. Erena is meh.

Kundry · 14/06/2014 10:56

I wouldn't know how to pronounce it - she'd spend her life telling people how to spell it and say it.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing - my name is like that but my name also says a lot about my cultural heritage, I'm not sure I'd feel the same about something my parents just made up.

fakenamefornow · 14/06/2014 17:04

I didn't make it up. It's a Japanese name, we are not Japanese though.

florascotia · 14/06/2014 18:10

There was a long thread earlier about Japanese baby names. Apparently, there's quite a lot more to choosing a Japanese name than just the sound.... though I think that 'e' in Japanese is usually pronounced as in English 'get'. So 'Erena' would be Eh-reh-nah. There may be exceptions, of course. Other Mumsnetters will know much more about this ...

Have looked and just seen that it's a Game of Thrones name. Not my cup of tea, but they seem to pronounce it: Ee-ree-nah.

fakenamefornow · 16/06/2014 09:57

Well it's definitely out now then. I've never even watched GOT.

OP posts:
Pebbles0934 · 16/06/2014 10:37

The only time I've heard if it is in Twilight... Spelt Irina (pronounced Ear-ee-na) who was one of the original Denali vampire "sisters"!
