William or Daniel (or Benjamin!)

DC2 due in 3 weeks. We already have Katie Rose, and every since she was on the way, our preferred boy's name has been William James Howard (the Howard is family name).
We both still like it and William is my dad's middle name, but just this week, we've both started leaning towards Daniel.
But we're not sure Daniel James Howard works as well.
I also really, really like Ben but our surname begins with B and DH has alliteration issues.
Which would you pick?
William is my gut instinct as it's always been "the" boy's name, but I'm slightly concerned with people assuming there's a Royal connection - even though DD is KatIE, not Kate.
Plus PiLs say there is a (tiny, I think negligible) risk of it being shortened to Willy, but as we don't live in Viz or a 1970s sitcom, I can't see that happening.
OTOH, Daniel is really popular, and I know two grown up Dans, both of which are idiots, which is clouding my judgement somewhat, as any son of mine would be brilliant in every way.
Also, my cousin has a Daniel and a Katie, but we rarely see each other - to the extent I forgot that fact until after my DD was born and my aunt reminded me.
For our girl's name, BTW, we are leaning towards Charlotte (Lottie) Emily.
I THINK we're agreed on that one....

I wouldn't do William and Kat(ie) to be honest it's a bit too close for comfort.

I don't like Daniel particularly (sorry. Just personal preference, and I also know a few grown up 'Dans' who are idiots).

Love Ben(jamin) so unless the alliteration is really bad, that'd be my choice.

LairyPoppins · 10/06/2014 21:42

Love William, don't like Daniel at all. Always sounds weedy to me.

I think William and Katie is fine.

Vijac · 10/06/2014 21:48

I love the name William. Think it's ok with Katie too, although you may have to be happy to laugh off the odd joke. Like Benjamin too, not so much Daniel. Charlotte Emily is a great name too.

Leeds2 · 10/06/2014 21:50

In order, prefer Daniel, Benjamin and then William. I don't really like William as a name, but especially not if I already had a Katie!

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 10/06/2014 21:50

William definitely. I don't think it matters dd's name is Katie. I'm not keen on Daniel and even less so on Benjamin.

dementedma · 10/06/2014 21:52

Benjamin is nice, Benedict even more so

BlueStarsAtNight · 10/06/2014 22:16

I love Daniel, I think Daniel James Howard sounds lovely!

Really like William too, but I'm not sure if go for it with Katie.

Benjamin is also nice, but I guess he would be Ben, and I'm not a fan of alliteration with a short first name, really depends on your surname!

OutragedFromLeeds · 10/06/2014 22:25

They're all lovely.

I wouldn't use William because of the Kate link, but also because there are SO many about. All my DC's have at least two William's in their class.

Daniel is great. I like Dan and Danny as well. I know a couple, but it's boy as popular as it should be imo.

Love Benjamin. I know a couple of baby Ben's. I also know a grown up Ben who is a pillock, but it doesn't put me off.

James is also a great name.

In contrast, I hate Lottie so much it makes me itch! Love Emily though Grin.

DramaAlpaca · 10/06/2014 23:10

I like Daniel best. I'd have used it only it doesn't work too well with our surname.

I love Benjamin/Ben, but I'd be with your DH on the alliteration.

William is fine, just not as nice as the other two options IMO.

ThingsThatShine · 11/06/2014 00:46

I love all three of these names, lovely choices. My favourite is Daniel and I would avoid William now that you've pointed out will and Kate as it may become the butt of jokes. But great name which ever you go for and the girls name is fab too.

TravelledByVacuumTube · 11/06/2014 00:56

I love all three names, with the following caveats:

Daniel has to be Daniel, not "Dan".

Benjamin has to be "Ben".

William - difficult one, especially with the Katie connection. How do you feel about "Bill"? I like Bill. Nicely old-fashioned, but not over-used.

Montsti · 11/06/2014 09:26

Charlotte Emily is beautiful and I love Lottie (I have a Charlotte nn. Lottie)!

I also love William and Benjamin. Not so keen on Daniel...

I would probably go with Benjamin (alliteration can work) to avoid the William/Kate (she might be Katie now but could easily be Kate when she's a bit older) or the Willy..

CPtart · 11/06/2014 09:30

Can't go wrong with either Benjamin or William, slightly prefer Ben.
No to Daniel.

RiverTam · 11/06/2014 09:34

like William and Daniel, Benedict rather than Benjamin. Don't like Ben much, or Dan.

BabyLove00 · 11/06/2014 09:48

The [grown up] Daniels I know are both been funny, kind, caring and not in the slightest bit weedy so it definitely gets my vote. They're also called Danny/Dan and suit the shortened versions as well as their full name.

bucylen · 11/06/2014 10:01

I have a Benjamin ( Ben) James. So Ben for me.
I like Daniel and William, but the Katie as well is a bit too close if trying to avoid the Royal connection.

CarriMarie · 11/06/2014 11:00

Daniel William Howard is the best combination for me.

Pebbles0934 · 11/06/2014 11:04

I like Benjamin best. It's not used often these days. I know lots of William's but it is a nice name. What nick name would you use? If you use Bill/y then that will be better with Katie than Will or Wills!

Daniel I don't really like. But I could be biased as met horrible Daniel's! I just don't think it's in the same vein as Benjamin or William and I know a couple of Dannielle's called Danni so could have a girl with the same name in their class. This may not bother you!!

squoosh · 11/06/2014 12:15

Benjamin, definitely.

Aside from the being the nicest of the three names William and Katie sounds naff and Daniel reminds me of spaniels.

RAFWife12 · 11/06/2014 16:43

I wouldn't use William with a Katie. It also sounds like you are going off the name, so if you don't love it don't use it!
I would go with Benjamin over Daniel. Nothing wrong with Daniel - and the one's I know are lovely. I just prefer Benjamin. The alliteration wouldn't bother me at all - it's not often your child will be called Benjamin James really? It still flows well.
