Much prefer the name Alex, plus I know three Jasons:

One assaulted me
One I considered a very close friend until he told EVERYONE we knew one of my darkest secrets
One is a cat

Oh no, four sorry! One is my old next door neighbour, and he was horrible too!

Jason, since it's less common nowadays and I prefer Alex as a nickname for Alexander.

I prefer Alex, but I would use as a nickname for Alexander. Never really liked Jason as a name.

OH is a Jason but insists on being called jay as he hates his full name. Personally out of the two-Alex or Jason ,I prefer Alex.

I'd choose Jason, I've always loved the Jason, I know 2 people with the name and I can them Jayce, and that's why I decided to call my son.

Alex. Poor old Jason has a fine heritage, it's just seen as a bit 70's and naff. It will definitely have a revival at some stage and people will think 'ugh Alex is so 2014. Jason is much cooler'.
