I love it, but I do worry I would have to correct the pronunciation all the time.

littlegreengloworm · 07/06/2014 13:08

I love it and it was on our list but we are going for Ellen.

I don't think it would be mid pronounced too much at all.

SomethingAboutNothing · 07/06/2014 13:08

I love, love, love it. DS would behave been called it if he had been a girl.

iamdivergent · 07/06/2014 13:09

I would pronounce Ev - eh - lin

I just really like it Smile

See I would pronounce it like you Ev- uh - lin
but there is one in my DD's class and it is definitely pronounced Eve - uh - lin so you may end up correcting people more than you might think.

It's a lovely name though Smile

  1. Can be pronounced in more than one way. I am too impatient to be bothered with this.
  1. It probably hardly ever is used as a boy's name now but it has been in the past, so it won't be 100% obvious from your baby's name that she's a girl. That would irk me too.

I am in my 50s and for me the name is strongly identified with Evelyn Home, the name of the agony aunt from Woman magazine. The other person I think of is Evelyn Waugh, who was a man.

thatwhichwecallarose · 07/06/2014 13:35

I think it's one of those names that is popular at the moment. I know of two born in 2014 already!!!

SoonToBeSix · 07/06/2014 13:39

Never knew it used to be a boys name, I think it's really pretty.

AuntieStella · 07/06/2014 13:41

I would associate it strongly with Evelyn Waugh, and though I don't think it's used on boys this century, it's still widely considered unisex. Is that OK with you?

Also, I would be put off because there are two ways to say it, and I know the years of making corrections would rile me. But perhaps you wouldn't mind.

ChristopherRobin · 07/06/2014 13:42

I absolutely love this name. Ever since I watched Pearl Harbour when I was younger. DH didn't like it for dd and so we named her something else. He's now changed his mind and likes it, with the nn Evie. So it's what we will call our next DC (due in jan) if a girl. I'd love a boy next, but the thought of having a girl also excites me as I get to use this name! It does worry me a bit about the pronunciation though as I know Ev-eh- Lin is more American, but that's the one id like to use.

squoosh · 07/06/2014 13:48

The Ev-uh-lin pronunciation is much nicer than Eve-a-lin.

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 07/06/2014 14:02

Evelyn Waugh's name was pronounced Eevlin.

Evelyn Glennie (Scottish percussionist, female) is pronounced Evlin.

Interesting that you are all assuming the second e is pronounced in some way.

squoosh · 07/06/2014 14:06

It depends on your accent I suppose. I know a few Irish Evelyns who are most definitely ev-uh-lins, not evlins.

Alisvolatpropiis · 07/06/2014 14:44

I would say

Alisvolatpropiis · 07/06/2014 14:45

Eevlin.

I always thought Evelyn Waugh was Evlin

Effic · 07/06/2014 14:47

I love it ..... but that really doesn't matter! If you love it then that's the one!

TurquoiseDress · 07/06/2014 14:59

I think it's a beautiful name- didn't realise it was used for boys in the post!

Personally I wouldn't use it as the different ways it can be pronounced would just annoy me!

burgatroyd · 07/06/2014 16:27

I would avoid as the eve... Start is very popular at mo

Toapointlordcopper · 07/06/2014 16:31

DH vetoed me using this, but I still maintain its absolutely beautiful.

RAFWife12 · 07/06/2014 16:32

Love it! It's in our top 3 if we have a girl!

SpottieDottie · 07/06/2014 16:32

I like it, plus the NN Evie.

DramaAlpaca · 07/06/2014 16:34

I like it very much, pronounced your way.

SauceForTheGander · 07/06/2014 16:34

DD's middle name - love it.

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 07/06/2014 17:54

Genuine question - those of you who didn't realise it had been used as a boys' name in the past - have you not heard of Evelyn Waugh or did you think he was a she?

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 07/06/2014 18:03

[Just to confuse matters, Evelyn Waugh's first wife was also called Evelyn. Their friends called them He-Evelyn and She-Evelyn. She ran off with someone called John and he later married a woman called Laura, which seems a more sensible arrangement.]
