I think of Evelyn Waugh. Say Eevlin. Assumed you were asking about a boys name. It's nice for a girl too.

I have one so obviously I love it.. We do get a few pronunciation issues but never been too much of an issue. (We pronounce it Ev ah Lyn)

I love it (it is DDs middle name). We pronounce it Ev-ah-lyn.

Too popular. This generations sarah. At one stage one third of the girls in dds class were called a variant of Eve. Drove me bonkers! "Mum can eve come to tea? Fell out with the other eve but blonde eve wanted to play but not Evie. She's too loud. I like Eva though" a aargh that name is full!

I love it and pronounce it Ev uh Lin

I like it, it was my grandma's name though so that may have influenced me. She was an Evv-Lynn, not Eve-Lynn.

I didn't know that about Evelyn Waugh - that's very funny!

I really don't get this name at all - maybe it's an association thing though as my mums best friend is Evelyn (Eva lyn not ev uh lyn) and, although she's great, I just think of a middle aged woman...also not keen on Eva/Evie..

I love this name. It oozes elegance.

A childhood friend had it. Her nickname was "Evvy" (rhymes with "heavy").

Oh good fact AllMimsy love that!

The boy Evelyn is pronounced differently to girl Evelyn - I always have to say in my head first - which is poor seeing as DD has it as middle name Blush

[Just to confuse matters, Evelyn Waugh's first wife was also called Evelyn. Their friends called them He-Evelyn and She-Evelyn. She ran off with someone called John and he later married a woman called Laura, which seems a more sensible arrangement.]

Genuine question - those of you who didn't realise it had been used as a boys' name in the past - have you not heard of Evelyn Waugh or did you think he was a she?

SauceForTheGander · 07/06/2014 16:34

DD's middle name - love it.

Love it! It's in our top 3 if we have a girl!

I think it's a beautiful name- didn't realise it was used for boys in the post!

Personally I wouldn't use it as the different ways it can be pronounced would just annoy me!

It depends on your accent I suppose. I know a few Irish Evelyns who are most definitely ev-uh-lins, not evlins.

Report
AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 07/06/2014 14:02

Evelyn Waugh's name was pronounced Eevlin.

Evelyn Glennie (Scottish percussionist, female) is pronounced Evlin.

Interesting that you are all assuming the second e is pronounced in some way.

Report
squoosh · 07/06/2014 13:48

The Ev-uh-lin pronunciation is much nicer than Eve-a-lin.
