Harry or Henry

Friends daughter has just had her second son and named him Henry, lovely name, I like it, but DS1 is called Harry,
Also a nice name but am I right in thinking they are both derivatives of the same name? I wouldn't say anything as it's none of my business, but it just got me thinking

Harry is a nickname for Henry yes.

Mrsindecision · 30/05/2014 22:20

Yes, odd to have a Harry and a Henry IMO.

squoosh · 30/05/2014 22:29

Weird and unimaginative!

squoosh · 30/05/2014 22:30

It's the same as having a William and a Billy.

honeybeeridiculous · 30/05/2014 23:21

Glad its not just me! Im guessing she has no idea its the same name! Oh well, im sure they are in for a lifetime of comments!

I'd probably comment if I'm honest.

honeybeeridiculous · 30/05/2014 23:24

"Congratulations on your new son, how funny you have named him the same as DS1" Grin

Algernon and Algie.

Alisvolatpropiis · 31/05/2014 00:32

This is as bad as the Isabel and Elizabeth I came across. Same name twice

I'd ask are you going to call him Harry as a nickname just to bother them a bit. Of course I wouldn't really as they have already named him, but I'd sure think it. Weird.

Henry and Harriet is slightly different, but still a bit odd.

Hakluyt · 31/05/2014 06:35

I think you should say something. If you see someone about to make a big but easily avoidable mistake then of course you should try to stop them. Tell them about Prince Harry. That might help.

BellaOfTheBalls · 31/05/2014 06:36

Yes, Henry and Harry are essentially the same name - Prince Harry is actually Henry.

Odd. But when it comes to children's names there is no accounting for taste....

spottydolphin · 31/05/2014 08:03

Omg when I read this and commented to start with I thought you meant YOUR ds1 not hers! I wondered what the problem was lol

Yes that's weird and I'd probably say something

Christelle2207 · 31/05/2014 08:34

I also read it that YOUR ds was Harry so was wondering what the problem was. So she has a Harry and Henry? Yes, odd.

Christelle2207 · 31/05/2014 08:36

Although, I had Harry on my list for ds and dh was adamant that Harry was short for Harold, not Henry. He's wrong IMO, but your friend may think that?

devoncreamtea · 31/05/2014 10:11

they don't sound so similar though eh? not like elizabeth and liz or something. she prob doesn't realise.

in my opinion they are so recognisable as individual names that it doesn't or moreover shouldn't matter.

devoncreamtea · 31/05/2014 10:12

oh and don't comment. it would make you look mean spirited.

Hakluyt · 31/05/2014 10:15

"oh and don't comment. it would make you look mean spirited."

No it wouldn't. It would make you look like a concerned friend. Obviously she "did not realise". But it is extremely unlikely that she will go through the rest of her life not realising.

spottydolphin · 31/05/2014 10:36

As it's a friend's daughter perhaps you could mention it to the friend...

Alisvolatpropiis · 31/05/2014 10:43

It is definitely something you should mention.

It would be like having a Jack and a John.

Do people seriously not check out what the names they give their children mean?! Crikey.

HamAndPlaques · 31/05/2014 11:02

I'd say something to your friend, Henry's grandma, NOT the mother. But yes, they're in for a lifetime of raised eyebrows. Perhaps the younger boy has a middle name that he could go by. Henry and Harriet is very different IMHO.

honeybeeridiculous · 31/05/2014 15:27

We'll, I've just come back from my friends house (Harry and Henry's grandma) I casually dropped into conversation that Prince Harry was christened Henry blah blah,
Friend realises the mistake and did say to her daughter that they were the same name, but daughter was adamant that was to be his name, after both the Grandads, one is Harry, one Henry!
Doh!! You can't help some people Hmm

OP posts:
squoosh · 31/05/2014 15:29

Ridiculous. People are going to comment on it for the rest of time!

'Wait, you're Harry and your brother's called Henry? But..........'

etc.

etc

etc.

etc.
