Names that aren't making a comeback

Erasmus

Grin

came across this today, Charles Darwin's grandfather. Just thought, you aren't likely to see that one on a baby names thread.

reminds me of a Lord Peter Whimsy novel where the characters in the village are called Obediah, Jeremiah, Hepzibah and so on.

Nora is on a big upswing where I live - it was toward the top of our girls list!

I can see Linda making a come back. It's actually really pretty (and has a pretty meaning). Susan is also lovely.

theelvisyears · 24/05/2014 21:01

I felt sure I would see my name on here - Paula - defo not making a comeback. Every other Paula I meet is the same age as me - never much younger. It must have been trendy in the late 60s, early 70s.

Viviennemary · 24/05/2014 21:28

Veronica I always think is quite a nice name. But the only one I know of is around 90. So that certainly doesn't seem to be making a come back. Sandra I don't think will be revived. Or Christine.

SpottieDottie · 24/05/2014 21:31

I know a lovely Veronica, quite possibly the kindest person I have ever met. Certainly she did more for me than anybody else I've ever known.

dementedma · 24/05/2014 21:51

Jealous of all the Simons. Its a name I love but have yet to meet a live one!

Fayrazzled · 24/05/2014 21:57

I bet Angela doesn't make a comeback. You don't hear of any young Angelas now do you?

I think Joanne will come back soon. Very popular in the 1970s and 1980s. Also Helen and Jenny (Jennifer), Samantha, Lisa, Jacqueline, Karen, Jane/Jayne and Sarah/Sara. Perfectly nice names that have just fallen out of fashion but they'll be back.

Fayrazzled · 24/05/2014 21:59

I know loads of Simons ranging from late thirties to fifty. Practically every other husband I know is called Simon. Very unusual for a small child but I do know a 7 year old Simon.

Fayrazzled · 24/05/2014 22:00

Also Nicola and Emma and Michelle. Very popular in the 1970s/1980s.

Fayrazzled · 24/05/2014 22:01

Also Susan (Sue).

Hellokittycat · 24/05/2014 22:07

I know an isambard, a norbert, a couple of josies, an Edmund and a couple of jaspers!

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 24/05/2014 22:08

Anita

Janice

Can't see those coming back.

Hellokittycat · 24/05/2014 22:09

Simon cowells baby is called Eric so I wonder of that will cause a few more to be names it too.
The one I never understood is Damien. Isn't Liz hurleys son called that?!

BurnThisDiscoDown · 24/05/2014 22:20

I know under 5s called Karen, Nancy, Hannah and Jasper! I think most names will eventually come back around, will the possible exception of Adolf and the like.

NearTheWindymill · 24/05/2014 22:25

Deborah (Debbie)
Kim
Heather
Jean
Diane

Gavin
Justin
Lee
Julian

None of those have been mentioned above. I can see names like Shirley, Joyce, Sylvia, Jean, Patricia coming back in 10/20 years though and possibly Simon, Julian, Jeremy, Martin for boys a bit later.

But if we are talking really old names then what about: Merlin, Gawain, Percival, etc. Interestingly if you go back a long long way I don't think there's as much varies for girls' names although am sure someone will be along to put me right.

When dd's 40 and has children no doubt they will think: Madeline, Rose, Imogen, Isabel terribly old fashioned and dated.

StatisticallyChallenged · 24/05/2014 22:48

theelvisyears I went to school with a Paula who would have been born in 1987 I think

I know of baby Gregor, Kenneth and Philips born recently.

Velvetbee · 24/05/2014 23:01

There's a little Derek locally, he's about 2 I guess. His mum was chasing him round Aldi's car park the other day.
I was surprised, it's not a name I thought I'd ever hear on a little person.

StealthToddler · 24/05/2014 23:07

How about Uvedale?

Artandco · 24/05/2014 23:21

Merlin is coming back I think since the tv series

I have a 6 year old Erik (needs a K) - it is a fantastic Viking name, and we have met 2 others under 10 on holiday.
