Erasmus

came across this today, Charles Darwin's grandfather. Just thought, you aren't likely to see that one on a baby names thread.

reminds me of a Lord Peter Whimsy novel where the characters in the village are called Obediah, Jeremiah, Hepzibah and so on.

I very genuinely considered Dionysus, Agamemnon and Horatio. We have no greek background at all, and for girls i considered Isis, Hera and Artemis. In the end we went for something not too dissimilar to Ian. Wink

DS is 4.

My seven year old finds Sharon, Brian and Andrew impossibly sophisticated and unusual. I fully expect to have a grandchild called Norman or Brenda.

Algenon
Roger

Eileen
Doris
Mildred

I think the 70's/80's names WILL make a comeback. In the 90's we would have peed ourselves laughing at the granny names that are all the rage now. Karen and Simon will be debated on Mumsnet due to their increasing popularity!!

steppemum · 22/05/2014 22:38

It is funny how they are not the same though.

Eileen, Doris, Mildred, all pretty much the same era.

But Doris is coming back.

Haven't heard of any Eileens and Mildreds.

(can imagine Mildred becoming popular though)

Doris? Seriously?!

hedwiggity · 22/05/2014 22:41

when i have a DC i like the name Sylvia for a girl or sylvianna and francis for a boy Smile i love old names with a bit of history or a nice tale behind them cant stand made up names of this generation like "lexie" and "kelsey" and the dreaded "lily mae" shudder so over used with no meaning or history behind them what so ever IMHO.

the more i think about it , Mildred, shortened to Milly will be here soon!

lower away - rather a low tone than it gets nasty over names.

I had a Great Uncle called Marmaduke - I can't see that coming back.

vindscreenviper · 22/05/2014 22:48

I shall tell my mum & aunt that they should stop thinking their name's ( Elsie & Eleanor) are 'old women's' names, they won't believe me though; they dislike their names intensely. What about aunty Pamela?

steppemum · 22/05/2014 22:48

Marmaduke - brilliant! If I ever get a large dog, he will be called Marmaduke

I know a year two child (6/7) called Fanny. She is named after grandmother I think. The school encourage her to call herself Francesca but mum is having none of it!

hellymelly · 22/05/2014 22:49

I know a newborn Agatha and an older child.

BikeRunSki · 22/05/2014 22:50

Derek

OublietteBravo · 22/05/2014 22:50

Actually we called him Uncle Duke which is quite cool really.

ScrambledSmegs · 22/05/2014 22:52

I've know of a young Marmaduke. Also a school-age Aeneas and a Hieronymus.

I do live in an exceptionally wanky area though.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 22/05/2014 22:52

I know a primary school aged Lauren, Louise and Eric.

What about Ralph?

Ludways · 22/05/2014 22:58

All names will sketchier appearance again at some point, what we think won't matter to the generations down the line, I certainly didn't care what my great-grandma would've thought of my dc's names.

Ludways · 22/05/2014 22:59

sketchier where did that come from?
