Erasmus

Grin

came across this today, Charles Darwin's grandfather. Just thought, you aren't likely to see that one on a baby names thread.

reminds me of a Lord Peter Whimsy novel where the characters in the village are called Obediah, Jeremiah, Hepzibah and so on.

kimlo · 23/05/2014 16:51

Hairylegs I know 2 children whose names are on your girls list. They are unusual though.

Lauren is very popular here I know loads.

burgatroyd · 23/05/2014 17:03

Anyone know any baby Elaines? That's due for a comeback! Gorgeous name.

alita7 · 23/05/2014 17:50

I doubt we'll see godrick, bertram or fanny for a while!

Artandco · 23/05/2014 18:02

Graeme don't think I know anyone under 35 called this

Rivercam · 23/05/2014 18:27

I know 14 year old Stephanie and Matthew. Matthew was the 6th most popular name around 2000.

skinmysunshine · 23/05/2014 18:41

I know lots of children with names on this thread. There was a Dionysus at DS's nursery

weebarra · 23/05/2014 18:41

DS2's middle name has been mentioned three times. Admittedly it is my dad's name but I do like it.

Delphiniumsblue · 23/05/2014 19:36

I know a 4 yr old Graham. Loads of Matthews.

OublietteBravo · 23/05/2014 20:11

Cornelius

Doodleloomoo · 23/05/2014 20:37

Matthew, Peter, Eleanor, Hannah. Really? They don't need to come back, they've always been popular.

If I have another daughter, Hannah is a contender.

Ermintrude?...

Doodleloomoo · 23/05/2014 20:39

Irene. Haven't heard any children called Irene lately.

Have come across a 2 year old Paula though, it struck me as very cute, if a little unexpected.

TheWoollybacksWife · 23/05/2014 20:57

When I think of my primary school class (1970's) I'm sure some of the names will come back - some have never gone away

John
Patrick
David
Terence
Desmond
Harry (this was an old man's name in 1979) Grin
Michael
Colin
Kevin
Neil

Alison
Catherine
Teresa
Maria
Julie
Tammy (Thomasina)
Margaret
Nicola
Susan

I suspect Colin and Kevin won't ride the nostalgia wave for some time.

steppemum · 23/05/2014 21:16

well, ds middle name is Graham. It is a family name, my dad's family are scottish.

I am very amused by people saying ''Lily, Rose etc are classic and that is why they have made a comeback, but Tracy, Karen etc won't''

The point is surely that in 1970 no-one thought Lily and Rose were classic, they thought they were horrible, old fashioned, died with Queen Victoria. They thought Karen and Judy were modern and fresh.

They will be the sweet old ladies' names in 2040 and then will make a comeback.

Lots of the names quoted are to me still current especially Hannah, Eleanor, David, Michael etc

Never say never. Who'd have thought Tabitha and such would be back with such a vengence?!

If you wait long enough all those oh so common names become unique and cute again.

I actually like Sharon - and Carol....so its hard to say.

steppemum · 23/05/2014 21:47

Tabitha is lovely, it is the name of mums cat!

OP posts:
FinDeSemaine · 23/05/2014 23:17

When has Tabitha been common, in either sense? Interesting the different perceptions people have.

WyrdByrd · 24/05/2014 01:15

I know a 6yo Shirley, a little Brian & a 4yo whose middle name is Pamela.

Also 2 (English) Seths, and a Wilf.

sashh · 24/05/2014 07:18

Nora - it can't make a come back can it?

Delphiniumsblue · 24/05/2014 07:39

If Elsie, Ivy and Pearl can anything is possible!

Artandco · 24/05/2014 08:39

Sashh - why not

weatherall · 24/05/2014 09:18

I was walking around a Victorian cemetery the other day.

What surprised me was that so few names were used.

There was very little variety compared to today.

Families passed names down generations and people even used the same name twice if one child died!

Even though lots of families had 6 DCs it was just the same names over and over.

What I saw:
Elizabeth
Jane
Anne
Isabella/Isobel
Catherine
Agnes
Janet
Mary

Robert
James
John
William
George

The names of people I grew up with born in early 80s:
Lisa
Joanna
Louise
Catherine
Caroline
Gillian
Hannah
Lorraine
Karen
Claire
Alison
Hazel
Lucy
Pauline
Juliet
Aileen

Michael
Andrew
Scott
Simon
Christopher
Paul
David
Roger
John
Jonathan
Neil
Stuart

Names in primary school now:
Stella
Isabella
Charlotte
Isla
Emma
Rosie
Freya
Rachel
Rebecca
Olivia
Jayden
Zara
Francesca

Alex
Mason
Connor
Liam
Ben
Dylan
Lewis
Sean
Steven
Felix
Sam

I actually quite like Linda, Paula, Sharon, Michelle, Karen, Susan etc. Don't know if I'd be brave enough to actually use any of them though!

Also, I don't see Josie or Joanna as old-fashioned at all.
