Amiya (a-mee-ya) or Avani (uh-varh-ni) for my half Indian, half English baby (if it turns out to be a girl?)

Vote please!

Avani. Very pretty.

People will mishear Amiya as Mia.

alita7 · 19/05/2014 13:05

I really like Amiya :)

Nocturne123 · 19/05/2014 13:33

Amiya is so pretty!

Montsti · 19/05/2014 13:33

Amiya! Avani sounds a bit like Armani which would put me off if you're going to live in the UK.

Leeds2 · 19/05/2014 14:10

I love both!

GooseyLoosey · 19/05/2014 14:11

I like Amiya.

busyDays · 19/05/2014 14:15

A friend of mine has a daughter called Amia, pronounced the same way. I think it is a lovely name. To me Amiya just looks like it is misspelled, but if that is the correct Indian spelling then I would say go for it.

Salazar · 19/05/2014 14:17

Amiya is so pretty! And lots of scope for nicknames.

Dislike Avani because it sounds like a market shoe brand.

Salazar · 19/05/2014 14:19

Ah, the shoe brand is Ajvani!

picnicbasketcase · 19/05/2014 14:19

Amiya is beautiful Smile

InfiniteJest · 19/05/2014 14:23

Amiya, though when I read it I thought it was pronounced A-my-ah. If people mispronouncing it wouldn't bother you then I think choose that one, as it's the prettier name!

Poofus · 19/05/2014 14:24

Both lovely.

trying29 · 19/05/2014 15:34

oh im enjoying this thread - my baby will also be half indian half british and i do not know ANY indian names, so really struggling

ToffeeJungle · 19/05/2014 15:39

I like Amiya.

I also know an Amara and an Ayanna both of which I think are really pretty.

mathanxiety · 19/05/2014 16:24

Amiya is very bland and sounds like a mishmash of other names.
Avani is much nicer imo.

Viatrix · 19/05/2014 16:57

I know an Avani (who is Indian) but she pronounces it 'AV-ar-nee' with the emphasis on the first syllable. I prefer it to Amiya.

ilovetea69 · 19/05/2014 18:25

Hmmm now I've seen the spelling Amia... not sure which is the correct one now!

My OH likes Avani as he thinks she could use the nickname Ava if she wanted to.

ToffeeJungle - I really like Ayanna too. Are you pn that Ay-anna or Ay-arna?

trying29 - if you do a search there are a few thread about mixed Indian and English names :)

I prefer Amiya.

How about Priya, Amira, Padma?

I love the name Bornali as it just rolls off the tongue.

burgatroyd · 19/05/2014 19:37

How could I forget Anjali!

burgatroyd · 19/05/2014 19:42

Nikita is Sanskrit for Earth...

burgatroyd · 19/05/2014 19:42

And a girls name

KoalaDownUnder · 21/05/2014 06:23

I prefer Avani, as it's easier and 'cleaner' to pronounce. Amaya is pretty, but it's a bit...smooshy? (Sorry, that probably makes no sense!)

I know a Levani, which is a Fijian name. I think it's stunning.

Mum2Pea · 21/05/2014 06:28

What about Avni?
