Jude
Barnaby
Rex
Gene
Francis
Gus
Jonas
Rowan
Claude
Tobias

What do you think? This is DS3 and I really felt that with DS2 we went for something too popular so don't want to have the same regrets and yet my DH would veto anything too outlandish.

Middle name to be either Oliver or William.

Thoughts gratefully received please.

Jude - yes
Barnaby - love
Rex - hate this one, sorry
Gene - no
Francis - really like this
Gus - oh no
Jonas - nope
Rowan - love, love, love
Claude - no
Tobias - yes

badgerknowsbest · 03/05/2014 13:37

I really like the name Claude, guessing I'm in the minority Grin Tobias, Rex and Barnaby are lovely names too.

bouquetofpencils · 03/05/2014 14:17

Gene and Francis are my winners.

Claude doesn't seen very masculine.

whitepuddingsupper · 03/05/2014 14:28

My favourites are Jonas and Tobias nn Toby. Not keen on the rest, sorry. Jude is very popular where I am, there are lots of little Judes and I definitely wouldn't use Rowan for a boy.

ilovebooks · 03/05/2014 15:28

My other two are Samson (Sammy) and Laurence ( Laurie).
My Nan was also called Gene which definitely influences the choice! Although my partner is a little Hmm about it sounding feminine.
I also like Jesse but it's been discounted for that reason..

What are your other boys called??

Sparklesandtassles · 03/05/2014 16:56

ilovebooks I have a Louie (not dissimilar to Laurie!) and an Oscar already.

I'm heartened by how well Jonas is received, it's rising up the ranks!

I love Jude and Rex but Rex would be my favourite!

ToffeeJungle · 03/05/2014 19:17

I like Jonas, Rowan and Tobias.

Although I don't like the name Gene, the sentiment is lovely. Could you use it as a second middle name?
Say Tobias Gene Oliver?

SweetPenelope · 03/05/2014 19:26

I really don't like Gus. It makes me think of gusset.

MrsTamkin · 04/05/2014 09:24

Fwiw i Know a 14 year ils Oliver who décidés histoire n'aime was toi Boeing and chose to change it to Claude.
His peers responded v Well and all seem to think its cool!

MrsTamkin · 04/05/2014 09:25
  • 14 year old Oliver who decided his name was too boring an chose to change it.... Stupid phone
Spottybra · 04/05/2014 09:27

I like Jonas. Too many Toby's around for Tobias. Definitely don't like Rowan or Gene.

wiltingfast · 06/05/2014 12:28

Jude - good name. But very sombre somehow.
Barnaby - love this
Rex - like this too
Gene - sentiment is nice but I'm not keen.
Francis - ok, would prob use frank personally
Gus - hate this
Jonas - this is ok
Rowan - this is quite feminine to me I prefer it for a girl
Claude - hate this
Tobias - love this

Hth!

florascotia · 06/05/2014 12:57

Jude, Jonas or Francis

What would Gus be short for? (Gustav, Angus, Augustus...?)

Agree with others who have said that to them Rex is more of a dog's name. I get a mental picture of German Shepherd (though I don't know where that comes from ....)

Rex is gorgeous!

evamummy · 06/05/2014 13:15

We used to have a German shepherd called Rex so to me it will always be a dogs' name.

Love Barnaby and Rowan.

Agree that Gus is a little too similar to gusset - not manly!

SpocksThirdEar · 06/05/2014 20:50

Jude - like, I know a couple.
Barnaby - love, love, love! But I'm biased as it's my DS's name!
Rex - it's ok, but not one I'd choose.
Gene - again, not one for me.
Francis - not really keen (probably due to annoying child with name!)
Gus - yes, love it.
Jonas - love, would definitely be on my list if I were to have more.
Rowan - like it, but it's very popular, I know quite a few.
Claude - like it, never considered it before but it's really quite lovely.
Tobias - another ok one.

Masses of Jude's where I am.
Like Tobias. Different and a bit arty
Gus will always be fat to my mind.
Rowan is lovely but now nicked by the girls so too generic.
None of the others deserve a comment IMO.

boys3 · 06/05/2014 22:29

I can't help thinking with Claude of Sir Alan's interview attack dog in the Apprentice - although he is always good value on the after show.

Tobias is a great name - although having one I would say that.

I'm showing my age a bit here but there was an actor called Oliver Tobias back in the 70s - I remember having quite a crush on him.

There are an awful lot of Jude's around now.

Gus - actually quite like it, has the Jeeves & Wooster connection as well.

ThingsThatShine · 06/05/2014 22:39

Rowan Oliver or Jonas William

Fab names, really lovely

RadioFourNotRadioSnore · 07/05/2014 09:54

Jude too feminine
Barnaby fine, but a bit teddybear like
Rex sounds like an aging film star
Gene too feminine, sadly
Francis old man name to me, can't see any come back appeal
Gus yes, if it is a nn for fergus
Jonas yes
Rowan yes
Claude yuck
Tobias ok

tilbatilba · 07/05/2014 10:05

Love Barnaby and Rex the most - great collection of names though except Gene!

squoosh · 07/05/2014 10:20

Rowan is the worst, such a drippy, wet name. It's horrendous.
