Kayia

Both my partner & I always said if we had a daughter we'd call her Kayia Louise. Pronounced 'Kay-uh'. Now I'm finally pregnant I'm unsure about the name. Not because I don't like it any more but because, sadly (& stupidly) I'm worried about how other people will perceive it. I have also googled it (out of interest) & it keeps wanting to correct it to Kaiya - I personally prefer the 'incorrect spelling' - the y before the i.

Honest answers please... what's your thoughts on the name Kayia Louise?

If you spell it Kayia it reads as Kay-EEH-UH, so if you want it pronounced as Kaya, just spell it that way.

Blueberrybaby · 01/05/2014 02:14

I'd pronounce Kayia as Kay-EE-ah which feels awkward. Drop the i altogether and just go Kaya or Kaia. Although be prepared for people to pronounce it as Ky-ah like how Maya is pronounced My-ah

DandyDindie · 01/05/2014 07:51

Please don't spell your daughter's name Kayia and expect it to be pronounced Kay-ah, it won't be.
The ending 'ia' will be pronounced as in Sophia or Maria - that's how the English language works. I can't think of a single example where 'ia' is pronounced 'ah' and your poor daughter will have to spend her life spelling her name and explaining that yes her parents can spell but chose not to.
Nothing wrong with Kaya, Kaia, or Kaiya if you want the Kay-ah pronounciation.

Martorana · 01/05/2014 07:54

I try very hard to get people's names right, so I would try to say "Kay-ee-ah" from your spelling. Which is very difficult to say and not what you want. Sorry- but I don't think I would be alone.

ItsAllAboutSheldon · 01/05/2014 07:58

Kaya is a pretty name but it is unusual so best to not also have a counter-intuitive spelling.

maggiethemagpie · 01/05/2014 07:59

I know a Kaya who is pronounced ky-ah, if that is the pronouciation you want I suggest you spell it that way, or else you/she will have a lifetime of correcting it! Kayia sounds clumsy. Don't understand why someone would want to call their child a name that doesn't look like what it sounds like (irish names excepted)

SirChenjin · 01/05/2014 08:10

My thoughts on the name are that you've made the name up by joining 2 names together...but I gather from Google that it is an actual name. I would pronounce it as it's supposed to be pronounced, eg Kay-EE-ah, but you can, of course, ask people to pronounce any way you wish. Just bear in mind that your daughter will spend around the next 80 years explaining the pronunciation to people.

peppinagiro · 01/05/2014 09:18

I didn't know it was an actual name, I thought it was made up. I guess it's the female version of Kai? I don't really like your spelling, agree with PPs that it will lead to a lot of confusion about pronunciation.

I think people will still be confused about whether it's KYE-ya (like 'sky') or KAY-ya (like 'hay'). I prefer the Kye sound, but guess it's meant to be the second one?

I don't really like it tbh. Sorry, I know it's very anti-mumsnet, but you did ask for opinions, and my gut reaction would be that it was a bit of a common name. Sorry...

Millasaurus · 01/05/2014 09:41

I want to thank you all for your honest opinions :) I have found it very helpful ... & have began to look for new baby names! Haha.

Kai is kye, generally, so it would be kye-ah.

Kayia is just dreadful, please dont!

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/05/2014 23:47

I think the traditional spelling of the name is Kaya and far less likely to be mispronounced.

Spelled Kaya I think it is a lovely name.

AlpacaYourThings · 02/05/2014 23:49

I don't like the name personally and the spelling doesn't look right.

Sorry, OP.

Mybellyisaneasteregg · 02/05/2014 23:53

Kaya would be a better spelling.

Sundaedelight · 03/05/2014 12:33

Kaya is better spelling. Not to my taste, bit chav & will date.

ForeskinHyena · 03/05/2014 12:55

Or Kaiyah.

squoosh · 03/05/2014 13:45

The spelling looks wonky, Kaya seems much more sensible.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 04/05/2014 20:35

The spelling would be absurd and would lead to constant mispronunciation her whole life.

chocchips · 04/05/2014 20:42

I dont think you need to look for a new name, just drop the i and go for Kaya :)

redlorry322 · 04/05/2014 20:43

I know a lovely woman named Khiya and I love the name.
