Esme or Fern?

We're really torn on names and would love some impartial opinions. We love Esme but are worried that it's getting very popular (although perhaps it falls into the camp of 'classic names' like Florence and Eliza that still sound classic and timeless even though they are well used now?).

We also love Fern, but DS1 is called Theo and perhaps they don't go together as well. Also, I was told by someone the other day that Fern is a 'trendy nature name' like Sky, which surprised me!

Any opinions?

I like Fern

I don't like Esme or Fern.

Florence and Eliza are both much nicer.

Not helpful!

Fern is a lovely name. I met a Fern over 30 years ago and loved the name so much I thought if I ever had a daughter she would be a Fern. I had 3 boys so it never happened.

Love Fern.

Fern is lovely. I don't like Esme.

Fern is gorgeous, Esme used to be nice before Twilight ruined it.

I love Esme.

I'm not so keen on Fern but would not describe it as a trendy nature name. I just think Fern Britton.

squoosh · 29/04/2014 10:50

I usually like nature names but Fern is absolute frumpsville.

mumofthemonsters808 · 29/04/2014 10:50

Both pretty names, it's very rare I like the names on MN so I just don't comment rather than be nasty. But either of these are lovely, if I had to choose only one it would be Fern.

DramaAlpaca · 29/04/2014 10:53

I like Fern, it's pretty. As long as it's not spelled Fearne - ugh. I think Fern goes quite well with Theo.

Not too keen on Esme.

yesnoyesnoyesno · 29/04/2014 10:54

How about Renesme?

WhereHas1999DissappearedToo · 29/04/2014 12:50

Fern's gorgeous.

Summerbreezing · 29/04/2014 13:57

I really don't like the name Fern, but Esme is nice.

Allalonenow · 29/04/2014 14:01

I much prefer Fern. Don't like Esme at all - looks clunky to me when written down and I'm never sure if it's Ez-May or Ez-mee.
