Hi all

I am unsure of sex so have a few to play around with. Please can I have an opinion on which you like the best and also popularity - have had a look at the top 100 baby names but appreciate sometimes it can be regional; for instance I don't know any baby Islas but every seems to be calling their baby's X-may!

Ok so:

Girls:
Lyla/Lila/Laila/Lilah

  • which spelling do you prefer
Lilian Eadie Josephine Vivian

Boys:
Liam
Lucas
Jacob
Arthur

I have like Ettie and Ida & Joel and Billy (William) but I think they're ruled out now but now typing them out I'm not so sure!

TIA as any input is appreciated :)

Love Authur.

I think Laila is a different pronunciation from Lila/Lilah etc. And I prefer Laila/Layla

Vivienne is my favourite girls name on your list.

And I'd spell Edie without the a....

saffronwblue · 16/04/2014 00:12

Love Lyla and would spell it like that. Also like Lilian, Vivian and Josephine. Not Eadie- does not seem as strong as the others. Have you considered Jocelyn?

Jacob, Arthur, Lucas and Liam in that order for me.

BlueStarsAtNight · 16/04/2014 01:27

Girls order of preference:

Josephine
Lilah
Vivian (prefer Vivienne tho)
Lilian
Eadie (this is too nicknamey for me).

I terms of popularity, I know one Lilah aged 2-3, and none of any of the others.

Boys order of preference:
Arthur
Lucas
Jacob
Liam

I know one Lucas aged 3, and none of any of the others.

Lylas are common round here in both senses of the word!

Your other names are IMHO fine Edith nn Edie is super ( ok bordering on spiffing it's so 1920s !)

BlueStarsAtNight · 16/04/2014 01:39

If you made it Edith nn Edie it would top my list :)

bakingtins · 16/04/2014 07:51

I like Josephine and Edith/Edie, not keen on Vivian or Lilian, Layla and all variants very common near me. Bear in mind that every spelling variation is counted separately on the list.

I actually prefer Joel or William to your other boys names, but they are all good choices. I think Jacob is pretty common (as in over used) near me.

Theonlyoneiknow · 16/04/2014 08:08

Fav boys name from your list is Liam, girls name would be Vivienne or Lila (but prefer Layal)

Ludways · 16/04/2014 08:11

Edith/Edie (although my GM was Edith and never got Edie)
Leila, with the e is lovely.

I really don't like Vivian, primarily because I know a total bitch of a 70 year old Vivienne.

William is nicer than Liam
Jacob is lovely but a bit overused amongst Ds's friends.

How about Caleb?

stonygreysoil · 16/04/2014 08:25

for girls, would go for Lillian and Vivienne; Jacob, Arthur or William for a boy.

I like Lyla, Laila and Lilah and only know one (2 year old in Kent)

Lilian I don't like, not sure why it reminds me of lily livered!
Josephine is my least favourite.
Edie (without the a) is lovely, don't know any
Vivienne is also nice, again don't know any,

Jacob and William are my favourite from your boys list. I know they are quite popular and I know a couple of each but still love the names.
Arthur is my next favourite.
Lucas just reminds me of Lucas Mucus from the garbage pail kids unfortunately!
And Liam has bad connotations/reminds me of several naughty ones but that is just my experience, no reflection on your baby!

Swanlake123 · 16/04/2014 15:42

Thanks for all your input!!

Interesting that you all seem to like Liam the least as that is what DP is the most keen on along with Lyla as if we were to have another baby he likes Liam and Lyla as siblings with the same letter.

I had also like Jocelyn as mentioned in another post but now I'm edging towards Edie (don't know why I put an A in it on my original post)

Still don't feel any closer to a decisi

Not me, Liam is my fav from your list!

smartypants1000 · 16/04/2014 21:18

Love Edie (not Edith) and Ettie. Knew an Esther who was Etty and that's lovely.

MrsTamkin · 16/04/2014 21:25

All your names are lovely

Vivian is the American spelling
Traditionally in Europe Vivienne is the girls name, Vivian the boy's.
Don't think it matters much- bit just for information.

I like Vivienne and Lillian best from your list- but be aware Lillian but be nn Lily- which there are a lot of?
Think the rise in Lila/lyla is connected to this too

I know at least one of all your girl's names under 5 - and 2 lailas

Much prefer William Arthur and Liam to Jacob and Lucas although all great names

Lots of Lucas and Lucases ( what's the plural of Lucas?!) around
