We're expecting our third child in may but cannot agree on a name for either gender. Our surname is very Scandinavian and DH has got Swedish and Irish roots and the baby will also have Scottish heritage from me so we have quite a large pool of names to choose from but nothing is jumping out! We're also not very up to date with what's popular at the moment as our eldest are beyond primary now - we do want to avoid popular names though.

So far we have come up with Maya (pronounced My-a not may-a) and Laila (again, pronounced Ly-la and not Lay-la) but do worry with both that there could be pronunciation and spelling issues.

If the baby is a boy we were leaning towards Oscar, but we have heard it's quite popular at the moment.

If anyone has any similar suggestions that fit our criteria that would be great!

If I saw Maya and Laila written down, I would assume - as I think most others would -that they were pronounced May-a and Lay-la. Equally if you said "her name is My-a/Ly-la" and I hadn't seen the name I would write Mya or Lyla.

They are both lovely names, and of course as people get used to them they will know how to spell and pronounce them. But it's something worth considering!

I also love Clara, and there's only one way to say that as far as I know!

I love Clara and Oscar!
Clara can be Clare-ah or Claah-ra, I prefer (and would expect to hear) the second.
Do you like Magnus?

Thank you, some lovely suggestions here. I really like Doug and Dougie, so Douglas is a great suggestion!

Yes, Clara we would pronounce clah-ra although I'm a bit worried that even Clara isn't as easy as I had first hoped!
