As my suggestion of the name Hades didn't go down well I figured I would post the rest of my list. I hope think that the rest of the names I like are a little less controversial. Judge away :)

My favourites:
Knox
Diggory
Neville
Axel

Other half's favourites:
Gannon
Brody
Brennon
Nathan
Simon

*We both like all the names but we both have our favourites.

Any suggestions are welcome too x

Nathen and Simon are nice because they are actually boys names not something you would name a dog.

Ithinkwerealonenow · 08/04/2014 13:39

Um, most of those are rather, erm, unusual. Are you feeling rather hormonal at the moment? I know my ideas when I was pregnant were rather different from afterwards.

Can you imagine yourself yelling the name across a busy park, and putting up with the incredulous stares? Are you happy for your child to put up with the teasing from his school mates?

Knox - no - stock cubes
Diggory - no way, sounds like an american redneck name
Neville - no, makes me think of Neville Chamberlain
Axel - I like it because of the Almighty Johnsons (although spelt Axl), but I still wouldn't inflict it on a British child

Other half's favourites:
Gannon - no
Brody - actually, ok. A bit Home and Away.
Brennon - no
Nathan - ok
Simon - ok

Sorry, you did ask.

stepmooster · 08/04/2014 13:42

Knox - as in Amanda Knox?
Diggory - Erm that is surely a dog's name
Neville - footballer
Axel - 80's cop played by Eddie Murphy
Gannon - sounds like Gammon
Brody - Bit too American for my tastes, unless you are American then that's fine
Brennon - so so
Nathan - ok
Simon - ok but potential to be called simple Simon

meditrina · 08/04/2014 13:47

Knox - no (too surnamey)
Diggory - like (makes me think of Victorian literature)
Neville - OK (Longbottom?)
Axel - only if Scandinavian

Gannon - no (too surnamey)
Brody - no
Brennon - no (but his about Brendon?)
Nathan - lovely
Simon - lovely (and not many around at the moment)

TheFallenMadonna · 08/04/2014 13:51

From Hades to Simon. It's a fair old leap...

Kids are generally very chilled about unusual names BTW. I have taught some unusually named children in my time, and it is very rare for a child to be given a hard time about their name - from children at least...

Seminyak · 08/04/2014 14:07

Knox - yes
Diggory - yes! So cool
Neville - no
Axel - no

Gannon - I like it but most people won't and it sounds like gammon
Brody - yes
Brennon - yes but I'd spell it Brennan
Nathan - hmmm, no opinion really
Simon - no

At least they're not ubiquitous and will actually do the job of a name - identify someone rather than 4 kids in the same class.

squoosh · 08/04/2014 14:11

Knox - no, will get lots of 'knock, knock' jokes.
Diggory - hell no. Mean Victorian mill owner.
Neville - dweeby. definitely no
Axel - still no

Other half's favourites:
Gannon - OMG no. Awful
Brody - not hugely keen, but it's the least worst.
Brennon - it's spelt Brennan but still 'no'
Nathan - okay
Simon - boring

I sound a bit negative don't I? Grin You both like surnamey names, there are nicer examples, I'll think of some.

deemented · 08/04/2014 14:12

I actually have a Brennan and we love it. It's unusual, but not completely WTF? And it really suits him - he loves it too. I also have a Ciaran and a Tate.

Out of the rest of your list I like Axel and Brody.

squoosh · 08/04/2014 14:15

I don't like surnames as first names if I know lots of people who have it as their actual surname. I know hundreds of Brennans so it sounds odd to me.

BluebellTuesday · 08/04/2014 14:33

I like Brody, but would spell it Brodie?

Dauntless1 · 08/04/2014 14:35

Axel is an ace name Grin that's my fav

clairealfie · 08/04/2014 14:40

They are all a huge improvement on Hades!

I much prefer your OH's list, bit American but that's not the end of the world.

Theonlyoneiknow · 08/04/2014 14:45

My preferences would be Brody but spelt Brodie, and Nathan.

Not so sure about the others

PrimalLass · 08/04/2014 14:45

I only like Nathan. The rest are bullying fodder. Sorry.

UriGeller · 08/04/2014 14:46

Wow crazy names! I'm slightly thinking that when the baby arrives you'll name him Ben or Jack Grin

Brody is about the best out of them all. I can't even look at Gannon or Diggory without seeing Gammon and Jiggery Pokery. Hilarious!

nyldn · 08/04/2014 16:20

first associations (which doesn't mean I dislike...)
knox - brangelina, Amanda knox
diggory and Neville - harry potteraxel - guns n'roses

like Nathan (nate) very much!

tak1ngchances · 08/04/2014 16:23

Knox - makes me think of Amanda Knox
Diggory - tractor?
Neville - ok
Axel - is this a name??
Gannon - sounds like ham
Brody - ok
Brennon - not a name surely
Nathan - ok
Simon - fine

pilates · 08/04/2014 16:36

Nathan is the only nice one, the rest are awful, sorry.

wishinwaitinhopin · 08/04/2014 16:41

I only like brody (cause of homeland) and Brady (cause of Sex and the city).

Congrats OP xxx

wishinwaitinhopin · 08/04/2014 16:41

I know Brady isn't on the list but thought id suggest it.

yummymumtobe · 08/04/2014 16:44

If you like diggory, how about Digby?

Foxsticks · 08/04/2014 16:46

Different spelling but Ganon was the name of the baddy in the Zelda games.

Stonecoldshame · 08/04/2014 16:47

Brodie, Brennon (although I would spell as Brennan) Nathan and Simon are all reasonably nice but I have to agree with a lot of the posters above that the other's are fodder for judgey-pants parents. Like we've just judged. Imagine the above thoughts but not spoken aloud just subconsciously in the back of peoples minds when heard. I tried to go for names which weren't of famous people or had class connotations for the same reasons. Don't worry what kids will think, DS has a very traditional Welsh name that some children chose to tease him about. One of the children instigating it was called Tallulah which of course sounds very classy in the local accent Hmm
DS and I had a little light hearted chuckle about it at home! Grin
See what I mean about judgey parents!!?

Stonecoldshame · 08/04/2014 16:49

Fox Knew I had heard something similar to that before and couldn't place it! No need to google it now!
