Heard this name today and think it is gorgeous! I think it can be short for Hepzibah...which I don't like!

What do you think? I also like Effie but I don't think it sounds great with our surname as it has an f sound in it!

It was short for Hepzibah in Silas Marner I think.
Could be short for Euphemia or Elizabeth at a stretch.
Effie might be too close to effing.

sybilfaulty · 03/04/2014 16:31

Sorry my immediate thought is "pen".

GreatUncleEddie · 03/04/2014 16:32

Also had an eppy fit. It's not PC. But it is said.

BebeBelge · 03/04/2014 16:33

Pen. sorry.

MrsBartowski · 03/04/2014 16:34

When we were growing up we used it as "don't have an eppie" (as in epileptic fit so that's what I would associate with the name.

I like effie though agree with the 'effing thing.

EyelinerQueen · 03/04/2014 16:35

First thoughts: Epilepsy and Epi-pen. Really not keen.

Effie, on the other hand, is fab.

PreciousPeach · 03/04/2014 16:35

If you don't like it, have you any suggestions for something similar to Eppie or Effiie?

I have never heard of an epi pen or eppy fit before, are these well know things?

PreciousPeach · 03/04/2014 16:36

Well to give you a feel for our surname it sounds just like Trophy so does Effie Trophy sound awful with the repeated f sound and both being two syllables?? Grin

BobaFetaCheese · 03/04/2014 16:37

Epipen here.

Effra? Edie?

curiousuze · 03/04/2014 16:38

Yes, there's a (very un-pc) slang phrase 'taking an eppie' which I guess derives from 'taking an epileptic fit' and means having a temper tantrum.

PreciousPeach · 03/04/2014 16:39

Is Effra a real name...I like the sound of it!

OP posts:
mum2jakie · 03/04/2014 16:39

Eppie, no sorry just brings to mind that vile 'eppy fit' phrase.

Effie is better. She is a character in the Hunger Games though - not sure whether that would affect your decision? I wouldn't use either as a full name in their own right though and I don't usually have an issue with shortened names.

Pinkbell123 · 03/04/2014 16:42

Not sure Effra is a real name but Aphra is and it's awesome! I think Aphra Trophy sounds cool too.

bakingtins · 03/04/2014 16:42

Epi-pen or epi(leptic) fit. Sorry.

The only Effie I've come across is short for Josephine.

BobaFetaCheese · 03/04/2014 16:42

Girl at school had the middle name Effra. Always remembered it, i like it

Viviennemary · 03/04/2014 16:45

Don't like it I'm afraid.

CPtart · 03/04/2014 17:06

Derogatory term for epileptic fit. "Don't have an eppy".

JonathanGirl · 03/04/2014 17:08

I also think "pen"

What about Ettie or Etta?

Minnieisthedevilmouse · 03/04/2014 17:08

Eppi pen - allergy thing. Stops anaphylactic reaction - have you really not heard of that??

Penelope? Call her eppi? ;)

WhatsTheWordHummingbird · 03/04/2014 17:09

What about Aoife?

BackforGood · 03/04/2014 17:19

My first thought was 'pen' too.

alita7 · 03/04/2014 17:25

as a name?

All that cones to mind is eppie pen and epileptic fit, colloquially getting very worked up about something.

mummytime · 03/04/2014 17:30

I thought pen too.

Aoife is nice, but lots of people don't know how to pronounce it.

Efra is okay.

Ettie - from Esther?

florascotia · 03/04/2014 18:24

What about Epona, Celtic nature goddess, with special love of horses??

NigellasDealer · 03/04/2014 18:26

Effra is a river that ran through Brixton, it joins the Thames just by the M!5 building. Useless factoid of the day.
Eppie sounds like 'dont have an epi' or epi-pen - the poor girl would never hear the last of it.
