Heard this name today and think it is gorgeous! I think it can be short for Hepzibah...which I don't like!

What do you think? I also like Effie but I don't think it sounds great with our surname as it has an f sound in it!

Eppie 'Trophy' sounds like apostrophe.

Effie always makes me think someone is swearing. I wouldn't use it, but especially with 'Trophy' as the surname -- too rhymey.

If your surname starts with a B maybe Aphra would go? Aoife might be better as it's Irish. I could be guessing wrong here however.

Esther is nice (as suggested)
Harriet (nn Etta or Hattie or Hettie)?

nooka · 05/04/2014 05:25

BobPatSamandIgglePiggle your story is from Silas Marner, and that Eppie was a Hepzibah. A very sweet story, and it's a lovely part of it, but not a good name now I think.

8isalotoflegsDavid · 05/04/2014 05:28

I really like it because of Silas Marner but unfortunately these days it has different connotations and she will be teased because of them.

Driveway · 05/04/2014 05:32

Pen here too.

Driveway · 05/04/2014 05:33

And Effie Trophy is too rhyming.

Layl77 · 05/04/2014 05:51

I thought pen too

SweetTeaVodka · 05/04/2014 11:18

I also thought epipen, epilepsy and adrenaline (epi is US medical dramas). Sorry.

We have a Sephie, which is a similar sound. Short for Persephone which I know divides opinion on Mumsnet! I've also seen it spelt Seffi amd Sephy (which is how the character in the book Noughts and Crosses spells it).

I know a Letty which is in a similar vein too.

Or there's Steffi/Stephie (short for Stephanie or in its own right).

mathanxiety · 06/04/2014 03:00

How about Bernadette, nn Etta?

Bernadette is quite retro cool imo.

I thought epidural! Effie is a lot nicer

LadyDowagerHatt · 06/04/2014 22:47

Not sure if it's similar enough but I have a 9 month old Erin and her nn (among others) is Eri (E-ree).

thegreylady · 06/04/2014 23:02

I know a 5 year old Effie whose name is just Effie. Eppie just reminds me of an old folk song Eppie Moray (I think) who was carried away by the laird but fought so hard "he couldna stretch her spey" she was a heroine :)

WhoAteAllTheCremeEggs · 06/04/2014 23:06

Elvie?

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 07/04/2014 05:06

Just found the lyrics, thegreylady. She was!

All through the night they wrestled there
Until the light of day,
And Willie grat and Willie swat
But he could not stretch her spey, her spey
He could not stretch her spey.

thegreylady · 07/04/2014 10:50

Thank you Empress I must try to find a recording on YouTube. i haven't heard it for many years :)

smokeandglitter · 07/04/2014 15:54

I use an 'eppy' pen but didn't think of that.

For some reason I thought Penelope or Persephone. And I adore the name Persephone so go for it Grin also love Effy and would use as a nn for Persephone or Elizabeth.

smokeandglitter · 07/04/2014 15:55

Oh, dislike hepzibah like you though.

ZenGardener · 07/04/2014 16:05

I like Ettie. Edie is very popular these days too.

I feel your pain as a lot of the names I really like just don't go with our surname.

IsabellaRockerfeller · 07/04/2014 16:16

How about Etta?

WhispersOfWickedness · 07/04/2014 16:23

I knew an Eppie when I was a child, she was a few years younger so would be mid to late twenties by now. I really like it Smile

aoife24 · 07/04/2014 16:37

I immediately thought 'throw an eppie' too.

MargotLovedTom · 07/04/2014 17:11

What on earth does 'stretch her spey' mean?!

Epi is the pen or the slang word.

I know a woman called Pepe (could also be Pepi I guess). Fairly similar?

thegreylady · 07/04/2014 18:55

It means break her hymen so that she is no longer a virgin and the forced marriage would have been consummated. Look up Eppie Morrie lyrics on YouTube and you will find it.

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 07/04/2014 20:04

Or listen to it here.

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 07/04/2014 20:05

Blimey, look what I just did!
