Lloyd or Laurence?

Baby is due soon, these are our top two but I am not in love with either of them.

Others on the list are Thomas (bit too safe) and Henry (our surname ends in Y so not super keen on it).

Please tell me what you think?

I love Laurence/Laurie - would have been dd's name if she'd been a boy

SimplySara · 21/03/2014 09:33

I like Laurence but not Laurie. I was just pondering the name Lloyd the other day - how come it is not really used anymore?

MairzyDoats · 21/03/2014 09:34

I love Laurie, gorgeous name.

VeloWoman · 21/03/2014 09:47

Yes Sara that is my problem, I do really like Laurence but not Laurie as a nickname (it sounds bad with our surname). One of the things I like about Lloyd is that you can't really shorten it, but since no one ever seems to use it I find myself wondering what is wrong with it!

Please keep the opinions coming, this is hard!

Laurence - although I am biased as I have one!

He is mostly Laurie as nn (which we use because I love it - memories of Little Women of course Smile) but gets Lol, Lozzy and all manner of other nn at school! The older he gets, the more he prefers being just 'Laurence' so is definitely a name with many options.

Theonlyoneiknow · 21/03/2014 11:09

I like both, had Lloyd on our short list but couldn't use it as close family member works for Lloyds !

hunreeeal · 21/03/2014 16:41

I like Laurence but Lloyd is also good - I don't know any little Lloyds.

furlinedsheepskinjacket · 21/03/2014 16:46

how about Lawrence

I have a Lawrence henry :)

shoobidoo · 23/03/2014 07:34

Lloyd. Good classic underused name. Won't be shortened.

Laurence sounds feminine and is girls name in France, the female version of Laurent. Like Florence is to Florent.

ThreeBecameFour · 23/03/2014 08:34

Laurence nn Laurie

itsnothingoriginal · 23/03/2014 08:56

@shoobidoo Grin my DS has never been mistaken for being a girl!!

Laurence is most definitely a male name here in the UK just as Dominique (which I've seen used as a male name in France) is considered a female name in the UK.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/03/2014 15:56

Absolutely love Laurence (dd1 would have been it). Really don't like Lloyd, sorry.

Pinkcustardpurplecustard · 23/03/2014 16:21

I like both - sorry no help at all. There's also Clarence, floyd, Claude

ZenNudist · 23/03/2014 16:23

Both are great.

Pinkcustardpurplecustard · 23/03/2014 16:28

I also adore Laurence but dislike Laurie. Could you use the nick name Lance, lars, lau, ren, rory?

CPtart · 23/03/2014 16:58

Laurence is a fab name.
