Ridiculous reasons for rejecting names

Courtesy of DH:
Esther - "It's the name of a chemical"
Elodie - "It sounds like a type of pondweed"

Anyone else fighting against this level of insanity? We're both teachers so hundreds of names have already been blighted by having taught so many spirited darlings.

I love Elodie by the way op, very pretty.

My DH vetoed Greta because it sounded like a German au pair and some others because they signed like a dinner lady!

Homebird8 · 15/03/2014 23:26

Imogen - is "like the name of every cancer drug I've ever taken", said DM to veto a girl name choice being considered by me and DH. Though she said to DF, when he liked it for me when I was born, that it reminded her of sanatogen (but in those days she didn't have the cancer card to play)

Tobias Hugh - we decided it sounded like a sneeze (lovely names, but say them fast together)

Felix - "You can't name MY DGS after a cat" (guess who)

LePetitPont · 16/03/2014 08:13

This is my DM: "I'd never call a child April, it was the name the first transgender man chose for himself". Hmm

Dovahkiin · 16/03/2014 08:58

LePetitPont - I'm slightly impressed that your DM would know that. Whole new league of bizarre reasons!

Lol at a name sounding like a sneeze. I was told a name sounded like somebody choking on a fishbone. That's his name now and nobody goes red saying it.

LizCurly · 16/03/2014 09:55

Never knew that about April! For me, Dana is the name that instantly makes me think transgender.

LePetitPont · 16/03/2014 12:20

Apparently she shot to fame in the 1960s - she had been working as a model for Vogue etc then a "friend" sold her story to News of the World or similar for a fiver!

Felix was our favourite until month nine. Then Alex Karev on Grey's Anatomy said to a new mother: "You can't name your baby Felix, he needs a STRONG name"
Boom. The name was instantly destroyed for DH.

PsammeadPaintedTheLion · 16/03/2014 15:31

James - too chauffery
Benedict - too Popey
Hector - too -y
Rory - too rrrrrrrrr-y
Hamish - too amish

MyNameIsKenAdams · 16/03/2014 15:35

Lawrence. "I really like it, but a colleague I used to work with has a little boy called it"

Erm.....so??

Jcb77 · 16/03/2014 19:11

Dh won't name her after any girlfriend he's ever had. Even if they only held hands. From the rejection rate, I'm guessing he's held a lot of 'hands' over the years.....

99redbafoons · 16/03/2014 19:15

My DH rejected Poppy because "I once knew a cat called poppy and she bit me."

Hmm
littleomar · 16/03/2014 19:20

Rowan for ds - because it's a girl's name
Rowan for dd - because it's a boy's name

Thanks dh

aquashiv · 16/03/2014 22:46

Finbarr - DF that's a donkeys name.
Sister that's old drunks name.
Hugo Sister too posh.
Elliot That's trying to hard.
I stopped telling people are choices then.

rebecklet · 18/03/2014 13:48

My DH rejected Poppy because "I once knew a cat called poppy and she bit me." Love this!

DH won't go for anything that remotely sounds like any TV characters he doesn't like. Hence not starting any new series at the moment!

saranga · 19/03/2014 14:20

Bran - sounds like a breakfast cereal. Gimme a break...

picnicbasketcase · 19/03/2014 14:26

DH rejected several because apparently they sounded like drug dealer names. Confused I also knew someone who rejected the name Grace, because 'she'd turn out to be built like a brick shithouse with huge hands.'

oldbutnotpastit · 19/03/2014 14:49

cassandra the double ss in the middle reminds him of the second world war .
he hates any name with an s in it and he wouldn't even backdown when dd pointed out his name contains an s

cecilia because his parents like it , this from a dh who normally if his parents say jump answers how high ?

matilda with dd5 too masculine
with dd6 to feminine

WolfMoon · 19/03/2014 16:25

Nathaniel, because War of the Worlds was touring at the time with Jason Donovan appearing as the Parson Nathaniel and DH can't bear Jason Donovan. However, he WAS okay with the name Jason...
